UNITED STATES PATENT "FFICE,
CHARLES E. RICE, OF LIVERMORE, KENTUCKY.
BEDSTEAD ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent N 0. 674,585, dated May 21, 1901.
4 Application filed August 14, 1900 Serial No. 26,863. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that LCHARLES E. RICE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Livermore, in the county of McLean and State of Kentucky, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Bedstead Attachments; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a side elevation of the invention as applied. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal section of the table-socket g and end of arm f. Fig. Sisadetail view of hinge-socket plate C. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through table-socket g and arm fof bracket.
The invention relates to attachments for bedsteads; and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, ashere inafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter Adesignatesa side rail of the bedstead-frame, and B the head-post or head-part of said frame.
C indicates a socket-plate which is secured to the back of the head-post or head-frame. Two of the sesocket-plates are employed, and these are placed one above the other in line. The upper socket is placed a short distance above the level of the upper edge of the side rail. These socket-plates form seats for the pivots of the main bracket-arm d and the brace-arm d', said main arm d and concave brace-arm d being parts of the first or main joint D of the bracket E. The main arm d is designed to extend on a level from the socket-plate and the brace-arm d to extend upward and outward in a concave curve, forming an oblique brace, whereby the bracket joint is materially strengthened. These arms are connected by suitable parts, strengthening the construction. To the outer end of this bracket-joint is hinged the outer joint F of the bracket, which also consists of a main or level arm fand a brace-arm f', said arms being connected, as indicated. In this manner a jointed bracket is formed having its upper portion level, while its lower portion is formed by an oblique brace, this construction being designed to secure strength to support the weight which the bracket may be required to withstand. The construction is also designed to provide that this bracing shall not interfere with the movement of the bracket over the bed in a transverse direction when desired, the concave curvature of Vthe brace portion having especial reference thereto.
The upper or main arm f of the outer bracket-joint is round, and on it is placed the tubular socket g of the adjustable table H. This socket g is secured to the under side of the table and is provided with a spring-catch lo, designed to engage a groove in the arm f when the table is turned to level position, in which it may be adjusted along the length of the arm f to such place as may be desirable. When not in use, the catch may be loosened and the table turned down, so that with the bracket it may be folded back against the wall of the apartment or around against the back of the bedstead.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-V l. An-attachinent for bedsteads, &c., consisting of the pivoted bracket having a cylindrical arm, provided with a longitudinal groove, a pivoted and longitudinally-movable slide upon said arm, and carrying a springf catch working in said groove, and a table carried by said slide, substantially as specified.
2. An attachment for bedsteads, dto., consisting of the pivoted bracket havinga cylindrical upper arm provided with a longitudinal groove, a slide pivotally connected with said bracket and longitudinally movable thereon, a spring-catch carried by said slide and normally working in the groove of said arm to prevent pivotal movement of said slide upon said arm, and a table pivoted to said slide` substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 'in presence of two witnesses.l
CHARLES E. RICE.
