Description

L. G. HAYDEN. Folding Chair.
Patented March 8,1881.
FIG. 7.
N. PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGMPHER, WASQXIIJGTON n c ti Nr'rED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOREN O. HAYDEN, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
FOLDING CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,585, dated March 8, 1881. ApplicatiOn filed. March 26, 1879.
- all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOREN (J. HAYDEN, of S vracuse, in the countyof Onondaga and State New York, have invented certain new and .seful Improvements in Folding Chairs; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, so as to enable any person skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of folding chairs which have the side rails of the back extended forward below the seat to support the front of the chair, and the rear legs also extended forward and pivoted to the side rails of the back, and supporting at their forward. extremity the front of the seat.
The invention consists in the combination, with a chair having its back constructed and combined with the rear legs, as aforesaid, of front legs pivoted to the lower extremity of the side rails of the back, and connected with the rear legs by a link, which allows the chair to be folded into a small compass, and effectually braces the same when unfolded for use.
It also consists of a chair-frame organized as aforesaid, and having a hinged seat confined and operated by a hook engaging a groove in the side of the seat, and provided with jointed arms, all as hereinafter more fully described.
For a more specific description of the construction, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, like letters indicating corresponding parts, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, showing the chair in position for use; Fig. 2, a similar view, showing the chair folded.
The letter A represents the back-piece, havin g a seat, F, pivoted thereto at cl. A groove, a, extends from front to rear in the outer edges of either side of the seat, and a hookclamp, c, permanently secured to the crosspiece b, operates to bring the seat in position when the chair is opened, the hook end of the clamp sliding in the groove a. The crosspiece bis attached to the leg-piece B, and forms a support for the seat F, as shown at Fig. 1. The leg-piece B is pivoted to the back-piece A at c. The lower end of the back-piece A is pivoted to a short curved piece, 0, which forms the front leg of the chair. I attach or pivot this'leg to the rear leg by a strap or link, E, atg and h, Fig. 1. This strap can be of wood, but is preferably made of metal. It will be observed that when the chair is opened for use the leg bears against and supports the leg-piece B at a point above the pivot e on A, and that the link E not only serves to draw the parts together in folding, but securely holds them in place. The advantage of this construction is obvious.
To strengthen the back-piece above the seat, as well as to provide a support for the arm, I attach a hinged arm, D, by pivots to the backpiece A and to the leg-piece B. The hinge is shown at t.
It will be observed that the joint 1' allows the arm-piece to fold with the framing-pieces.
All of the parts can be ornamental in form, and are simple and cheap in construction, and can be folded very compactly.
I am aware that many styles of folding chairs have been made and patented involving almost every conceivable element but my device differs from all of these in having the back-piece pivoted to a leg and support, 0, connected to the frame-leg B by a link, E.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I 1. A folding chair consisting of the seat F, constructed as shown, confined and operated by the clamp-hook c and recessed groove a, in combination with back-piece A, pivoted to the leg-piece 0, attached to frame-leg B by a link, E, and having a jointed arm, D, all the parts combined and arranged substantially as described and set forth.
2. The leg-support G, pivoted to the backpiece A and attached to the frame-leg B by a link, E, the parts being combined substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of March, A. D. 1879. p
L. O. HAYDEN.
