Description
7T. L. FISHER.
EASEL.
Patented. June-6,1877.
".PEI'ERS, PHOTV-LITHOGRAPHEW, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TIMOTHY L.- FISHER, OF ARLINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO FRANCIS S. FROST, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN EASELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l91,677, dated June 5, 1877; application filed February 5, 1877.
Which- Figure 1 shows a rear view, and Fig. 2 a side view, of one style of easel Fig. 3, a rear view, and Fig. 4 a side view, of another style of easel and Figs. 5 and 6 are details.
My invention relates to that class of folding easels which have but three legs, and which, as at present constructed, have no means provided for holding them firmly in p sition for use, the consequence being that a slight blow on the rear leg, or an accidental push on the easel, will cause it to spread apart or topple over, frequently causing serious inconvenience to the artist; and my invention consists in providing a suitable brace and attaching it to the easel in such a manner that the slope of the easel can be varied at pleasure, that it will not interfere with folding the easel, and
that it will hold the easel firmly in whatever position it may be placed.
In Figs. 1 and 2 I have shown the easel as having the rear leg A fastened to the front legs B by a single hinge at O, and in that case a brace is needed, extending from each of the front legs to the rear leg.
This brace D, I prefer to make of wire, and to pivot the ends to the front legs, the loop E connecting with a clasp, G, said clasp surrounding the leg A, and fitting it so closely, by means of a spring or other device, that while it can he slid up and down on the easel at will, it may remain fixed at whatever point it is placed.
-For easels having two hinges at the top, the rear leg being made in the form of a T, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, a single brace is all that is requisite, and the clasp may be made to fasten with a set-screw, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a tripod-easel having two of its legs framed together, and the other leg hinged to the frame, the brace D and clasp G, constructed as described.
TIMOTHY L. FISHER.
