NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CAROLINA E. SOHLEIER, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
CONVERTIBLE CHAIR AND TABLE.
PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,847, dated June 1, 1886.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LCAROLINA E. ScHLEIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at N ashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, haveinventeda new and useful Improvementin Convertible Chairs and Tables, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to simplify the construction of convertible chairs, whereby the back can be held at any point of adjustment from a rearward vertical position to a horizontal position.
My improvement consists in apeculiar construction of side frame, by which the back (which is plain on the outside) is hinged to the arms and guided from the seat of the chair, as hereinafter described, and poi uted outin the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a side view of the device with the back in position for use as achair. Fig. II is a side View showing the back adjusted for use as a table, and in dotted lines inclined to serve as a reading-desk or easel or a stand for portfolios, music 85c.
The chair-seat 1 is supported on legs 2 2 in customary manner and provided with fixed arms 3, on which are pivoted at 4 my improved frames, formed with upper and lower adjustable arms, 5 6, which are united at front and .permanently secured at their rear extremities to the chair-back 7. The lower member, 6, of each adjustable frame is provided with a slot, 8, concentric with the pivot 4, working over a pin or stud,9, in the chain seat 1, so as to limit the movement of the back and adjustable frames, the two extremities of movement being shown in Fig. I, and in full lines in Fig. II. A thumb-nut,10,on the stud 9 is employed to fix the shifting frames and back in any position to which they are adjusted.
In the position shown in full linesin Fig. II, the back 7 will be seen to constitute a convenient table-top, and by shifting it to the oblique position shown in dotted lines in the same figure serves as a desk or easel or music or portfolio stand, or for any such use, a suitable cleat or one or more pivoted claws 11 being applied to the lower edge to retain a portfolio, book, sheet-music, or other article placed upon it. Spring-catches of any preferred form may be substituted for the thumb-nut 10, to hold the back in any position to which it is. adjusted.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A frame for connecting the back with the seat and arm of a chair, consisting of upper arm, 5, adapted to be hinged to the chairarm, and lower arm, 6, formed in one piece with the upper arm, and provided with a slot, 8, concentric with the hinge, adapted to receive a guide-pin on the chair-scat, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a chair-seat,1,having stud 9, chair-arms 3, having pivots 4, chairback, and frames connecting the back to the chair-arms and seat, each frame consisting of an upper arm,5,hinged to a pivot, and alower arm, 6, having a slot, 8, concentric with the pivot and working over the stud, substantially as set forth.
