Leners Patent No. loam, dated December 6, i870.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING CHAIRS.
TherSehedule referred to in -these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, I SAAC N. DANN, of Newl-Iaven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Fold-- ing Chair; and l ldo hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which vsaid drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents inf- Figure 1, a sideview; and in Figure 2, a vertical centra-l section.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of chairs commonly called folding chairs, that is, such as are constructed to fold into compact form when not required for use, for transportation or for other purposes. v
lieretot'ore the seat has been pi voted to some part of the chair, so that in folding it may be turned into a close position with other parts of the chair. This construction of seat renders the chair liablel to get out of order, and has been a source of objection to this otherwise desirablel class of chairs.
The object of my invention is to overcome thisldifficulty, and
Y It consists-4- First, in the arrangement of the rear legs so as to cross and be pivoted to the front legs, and extending up to the front, and attaching the seat to the said legs, both in front and in rear of the pivot, making the seat a fixed part of the said legs. Y
Second, iu the arrangement of the rundle, which forms the support for the rear of the seat upon the rear legs, so as to forni a bearing against the front legs and support the chair when open.
Third, in curving or extendingthe front end of the rear leg upward and forward, so as tobe attached by a strap or similar device to the frontleg above the seat.
attached tot-he legs at such point in the rear of the pivot as will cause the said bar D to bear against the rear of the front legs when the legs are spread, as seen in tigs. l and 2.
Forward of the pivot on the rear leg is arranged a second bar, E, and to these two bars the seat F is tirmly secured, thus making the scat a part of the rear legs, the scat lying between the two forward legs A and the bars in relativeposition, as shown, so that the legs may be folded together, as denoted in broken lines, fig.2.
The tbrward or upper end G of the rear legs is curved or extended 'up to the position, nearly, as shown, so that a strap, H, secured to the top of the upper end G of the rear leg and to the forward leg or back of the chair at h, will form a support for the arm of the sitter.
As in the posit-ion shown for the forward legs` the inclination is too great for the back, a bar, I, near the seat, extends from one post to the other, and is curved to the rear so as to bring the inclination of the back into proper relative position with the seat,as shown in the drawing.
I claim/as my inventionl 1. In a folding chair, the arrangement of the seat F, secured to the legs B, both in front and in the rear ofthe pivot, substantially in the manner setforth.
2. In a folding chair consisting of the crossed pivoted legs A B, the arrangement of the bar D "upon the rear legs-to bear against the forward legs when the chair is open, and form a support to retain the chair in an upright position, substantially as described.
3. In a folding chair consisting of the crossed piroted legs A B, and having the sea-t secured to the legs B, as described, the rear legs extended up and combined with the strap H, connecting the upper end G of the rear legs with the forward legs above the seat, substantially as and for the purposeV specified.
' ISAAC N. DANN.
