Description
G. HUNZINGEN. FOLDING AND REGLINING CHAIR.
Patented Sept '15, 1863.
[1 N ITED STATES PATENT OFF 1 CE.
GEORGE HUNZINGER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO 0. HENRY GLINSMAN, OF.
NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING AND RECLINING- CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 39,995, dated September 15, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HUNZINGER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Folding and Reclining Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein Figure 1, is a side elevation of my chair as ready for use, Fig. 2, is a view of the same as folded for transportation, and Fig. 3, is a section of the foot rest as raised for use.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
My invention is an improvement upon that for which Letters Patent were granted to me dated October 1st 1861, and consists in an improved construction of folding arm to the chair, also in a hinged bottom to the chair, so applied with the folding X legs, that the same shall prevent the legs folding or spreading under the operation of a weight. I also apply adjustable connecting bars between the back and foot rest in such a manner that their relative inclination may be adjusted.
In the drawing a, a, are the legs united by cross pieces and placed together in an X form so as to fold like a camp stool.
c, is the back united to the legs by the joints 1, and the back is to be upholstered, or covered with cane in any suitable manner. The side pieces of the back extend below the joints 1, 1,) and on the legs a, are buttons or latches (as at 2,) which when placed so as to take the lower ends of the back pieces a, 0, retain them nearly on the line of the legs at an inclination suitable for reclining. e, is the foot rest united at the point 4, to the legs a. These parts, including the desk formed of the board 6, and props 7, shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, are all made substantially the same as in my aforesaid patent and do not require further explanation.
The seat I), is formed of a wooden frame hinged at 10, to the legs a, and at the front edge the frame passes over a projection 11, on the bar connecting the front ends of the legs a, a, as seen in Fig. 3, so that the strain caused by the weight acting to compress the X shaped legs is taken on this frame, and as the said frame can be caned or upholstered it is preferable to a webbing seat, and when the chair is folded as in Fig. 2, said seat turns over against the back.
In order to retain the back at any desired inclination I make the bars d, wit-h notches 12, 12, so that one of said notches may be placed over the pin or screw at 4, and thereby hold the back as inclined, or said notches may be placed over the pin or screw 3, on the side pieces of the foot rest 6, and incline the same by the action of the back more or less as desired.
In order to sustain the foot rest when elevated I provide legs 18, hinged to the underside of 6, so as to fall down into the position shown in Fig. 3, and support said foot rest nearly level; and to extend the length of the foot rest so that the same will be more comfortable for sleeping on, I provide a board 14, or sliding frame beneath the foot rest 6, that can be drawn out, see red lines in Fig. 3.
The arms 7 are connected to the back at 15, and to bars 9 that attach to the joints 16, of the X legs a, and hence turn and fold in the manner represented, when the chair is shut together for transportation.
My chair is simple strong convenient and capable of being placed in any convenient position for reclining, or may be folded into a small compass if desired.
hat I claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is 1. The arms f, in combination with the bars 9 attached at the center of the folding X legs as and for the purposes specified.
2. I claim the notched bar d, connected to the lower end of the back 0, in combination with the foot rest 0, and pins or screws (3 or 4,) as and for the purposes specified.
3. I claim the seat (Z, formed of a frame hinged at 10, and taking the projection or rib 11, in combination with the folding X legs a, and back 0, as and for the purposes specified.
4. I claim the sliding board or frame 14, in the foot rest 6, when combined with the folding and reclining chair aforesaid in the manner and for the purposes specified.
In witness my signature this 12th day of May 1862.
GEORGE HUNZINGER.
