NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK KOSKUL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SOFA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,872, dated August 4, 1885.
Application filed December 29, 1883.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, FREDERICK KosirUL, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofas and Lounges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in sofas and lounges, the object of the same being to provide a sofa, lounge, or analogous article of furniture with a back section which may be easily and quickly folded into a horizontal position and serve as a table or game-board for the use of the occupants of either or both ends of the sofa. With these ends in view, my invention consists in the parts and combinations ot parts as will be more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a sofa, showing the movable section in position to form a portion of the back. Fig. 2 is a front view showing the movable section in its position as a table. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.
A represents a sofa.
B is the lower section of the back, and is rigidly secured to the sofa.
B2 is the upper section of the back, rigidly secured to the lower section, B', and is provided with a recess, preferably at its middle portion, sufticiently broad and deep to receive the movable or tilting section O and leave the front of this section flush with the other portions of the back.
The back section, B2, may be made plain or provided with ornamental work, as desired.
The movable or tilting section C is provided with a front which is tufted, carved, or in some other manner constructed to harmonize with the other portions of the front side of the sofaback, and with a back which is suitably prepared to serve as a table-face when the section is tilted forward. This section C is hinged to the stationaryback B or B2 by any of the (No model.)
convenient and secure devices commonly in" use, whereby the section O shall be allowed to tilt forward into a horizontal position. 'Io give this section C a rmness in its horizontal position, a cross-bar, b, is secured in a horizontal position just back of a-nd a little above the lower edge of the section C when said section occupies an upright position, and said bar is so arranged that the lower edge of the section C will bear upward against the lower side of the bar at the moment when the section C reaches its horizontal position. The tiltingsection C is held in an upright position by spring-catches e, secured to the back .B2,`
or by any other suitable devices.
One manner of hin ging the section O to the sofa back is as follows: Pintles fare rigidly secured to the back, at opposite sides of the recess, and project inwardly toward each other. The section C is provided on opposite sides ith elongated grooves f', (shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3,) or with metallic plates having elongated slots or recesses therein in which th'e pintles rest. Thus it will be seen that the section O can be turned down to a horizontal position and then held in such position by moving the section rearwardly until the lower or rear end thereof rests under the cross-bar b.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rIhe combination, with a sofa or lounge having a rigid back, the latter being provided on its front face with a recess, of the section C, pivoted near its lower end within said recess,
and a cross-bar secured to the back near thev lower edge of the recess and running transversely across the same, for holding the section C in a horizontal position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. FREDERICK KDSKUL.
