To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, JACOB BURKHARTZL the same can becompactly folded, the con-V struction being such however that when in use the chair will be firmly held to prevent accidental collapse.
1With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the appended claims, it being further understood that changes in the spel cific structureshown and described may be made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

ln my present invention l provide a chair which when not in use can be compactly folded.
ln the drawings the numeral 1, designates the back of the chair and 2, 2, the two rear legs which are connected by means of the rear cross-bar 3. As shown in Fig. 2, one of the rear legs 2, is provided with a recess d, having a laterally extending opening 1'. Secured to the rear chair legs 2, 2, are the hinges 12, to which is secured the seat 19. By means of the hinges 21, the front legs 23, secured to the seat 19. rlhe front legs are braced near their lower ends by means of the rung 3'. As shown thesefront legs 23, carry the hinges 24, giving support to the seat rungs 25, which by means of the hinges 26, are secured to the rear legs 2. This construction permits the chair seat 19, being folded against the back 1, of the chair, as disclosed in dotted outline in Fig. 3. 'llhe rear legs are strengthened at their lower ends by means of the rung 5".
Held within the recess 4, is a Vsshaped spring including the two members 5 and l the latter leaf of which being shorter in length thanthe former, with an intermediate collar 6, through which passes a suitable securing pin l1, to hold this spring within Ythe recess against casual displacement. The
recess 4, fis closed by .means of the cover 3', shown in Fig. 2. Extending from the stem 5, of the spring is the latching bolt 9,v having its upper edge rounded, while its under edge is flat and projects forwardly a considerable `distance beyond the outer surface of the leg.

Held within the opening 9', and communicating with the recess 4, is the operating stem 10, by means of which the spring can be forced backward, to carry the latching bolt 9, rearward. The bolt 9 is normally held projected beyond the forward edge of the chair leg, as shown'in Fig. 2 by the pressure of the contacting leaf of said spring.
Secured to the under face of the chair seat 19, is the lug or keeper 20, having a suitable socket with a flat bottom 4' the innermost point of which is radially a greater distance from the pivot of the hinge of the bottom than the outermost point to prevent the out ermost point of the lug from passing the innermost point of the latch when projected linto said socket the entire distance.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 1, the chair legs 2, are provided with the stop shoulders 7',
.After the bolt has found lodgment within the socket of the lug or keeper 20, the seat cannot' be carried upward, and the chair is firmly held against casual collapse.
As shown in Fig. 3, the cross-bar 3, is provided. with an aperture 2', across which errlso .engages the chair seat 19, while the opposite end engages the bar 3, so that the spring normally .exercises a tendency to force the seat upward. The chair 'seat being locked, shoulddt be desired to fold the chair it is simply necessary to shove the operating stem` inward, to carry the bolt out of the lug. As soon as the bolt escapes, the spring 18, forces the seat upward, so that the seat will contact with the back 1, as disclosed in dotted outline. l
It isof courseunderstood that chairs embodying'my invention may be made in various sizes. The chair is further simple, and comparatively inexpensive in construction and both durable and eiicientl in operation, and can be adjusted either into a folded or working position with ease, accuracy and despatch. i
Having ythus described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A folding chair having in combination,-
`legs hinged to said seat, side rungs hingedly connected to each frontv and rear leg one of said rear legs having a recess with a forwardly extending opening, a V-shaped spring within said recess,a latching bolt secured to one end of said spring projecting through said opening, a keeper having a socket Ysecured to said seat, said bolt arranged to latch into said socket, and means for operating said spring whereby said keeper may be released.
2. A folding chair having in combination, two rear legs, a rigid cross bar connecting said legs, a seat hinged to said legs, two front legs hinged to said seat. 'side rungs ing laterally through the lower end of said? spring, and means to operate said spring wherebysaid keeper may bel released.
3. A folding chair having in combination, two rigid rear legs, a rigid cross bar connecting said legs, a seat hinged to said legs,
two rigidly connected front legs hinged to said seat, a side rung hingedly connected to each front and rear leg one of said rear legs having a recess with a laterally extending substantially rectangularopemng, a V-shaped spring within said recess, a fiat sided latching bolt secured to one end of said spring projecting through said opening, and a push stem secured to one end of said spring and located beneath said seat.
4. A foldingchair having in combination, tWo rear legs, a cross bar connecting said legs, a seat hinged to said legs, two front legshinged to said seat, a side rung hingedly connected to each front and rear leg one of said rear legs having a recess with a forwardly extending opening, a V-shaped spring having one leaf shorter than the other occupying said recess, a latching bolt secured to the longer leaf of said spring and projecting through said opening, a pin extending laterally through the junction of said sprlng leaves, and means to operate said spring whereby said keeper may be released.
