- chairs in which the back legs and'back are the seat h, and are pivoted at e to the back UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFI E.
EDWARD W. VAILL, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN FOLDING CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No, 179,978, dated July 18, 1876; application filed May 18,1876. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD W. VAILL, of
have invented an Improvement in Folding Chairs, of which the following is a specification:
This improvement applies to that class of formed in one frame, and the front legs are pivoted directly to the back legs, as in the patent of P. Born, reissued December 21, 1875.
M y presentinvention consists in the com bination, with the frame forming the back and back legs and the pivoted front legs, of a seat that is pivoted to the front legs, and links or hinges connecting the seat to the back-frame, whereby the back of the chair-seat is raised and swings upwardly in folding the chair, "and the weight of the seat serves at all times to prevent the chair folding while being used or moved from place to place.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical sec-. tion of the chair in its folded position, and Fig. 2 is a similar view with the chair open for use.
The back legs to extend up to form the backfralne. There are cross-pieces b, forming the back-rests or receiving the upholstery or ornamental back. The front legsd extend above legs a, similar to those in the said Born patent. There may be arm-rests g, if desired.
Instead of the seat being hinged or pivoted to the back legs, as in said patent, it is pivoted or hinged to the front legs, or the bar seat, at or near the under side thereof, and
the other ends are connected to the back legs, either directly or by the cross-rail 0.
When the chair is folded the front edge of the seat or seat-frame turns downward and the back edge swings upward, and the front legs close against the back legs, as seen'in Fig. 1. v
A latch or catch may be applied at the junction of the back legs and seat, to prevent the chair folding backwardly by pressure upon the front edge of the seat, as seen'at t, Fig.2.
I claim as my invention-- The seat h, pivoted or hinged to the front legs or cross-bar. and the linksl, uniting the seat to the back legs, in combination with the front legs, extending above the seat and connected to the back legs, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 11th day of May, A. D. 1876.
