IMPROVEMENT IN RECLlNlNG-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,299, dated September 30, 1873; application filed March 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ELIsEA C. RANKs, of Boston, in the county of Suifolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in RecliningOhairs, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to that class of reclining-chairs in which the seat-frame, the back-frame, and the arms are jointed together, the seat moving slightly forward and the arms back as the sitter moves from upright sitting posture to a reclined position. It relat-es particularly to the manner of suspending the seat-frame to and within the foot-frame and back-frame, and its object is to facilitate the insertion and removal of the seat-frame, and to secure a firmer, stronger, and more reliable attachment of the seat within the chair.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvement in reclining-chairs is illustrated, Figure 1 being a vertical section from front to rear of chair, showing the parts in place for a person to sit in an upright position; Fig. 2, a section in plane of line x, Fig. 1.
a in the drawings denotes the stool, or stationary part of the chair, composed of the legs b, outer side rails c, and cross-bars d; e, the swinging frame which supports the feet and legs when the chair is extended. f is the swinging back or back-frame. The back is pivoted at bottom to the outer side rails o by pins g, and the frame e to the outer side rails c by pins h, the frame f swinging freely back and the frame e freely forward on their respective pivots. Just below the pivot-pins g h the inner side rails t' of the chair-seat are hung to the inside of frames ef upon rods lm. These rods Z m are located, the one, l, at the leg-frame and the other, m, at the back-frame, and in each case extend across the entire width thereof, and, by heads or collars u, are sunk within sockets of corresponding shape therein. As before stated, upon these rods lfm-the inner side rails t' of chair-seat are suspended, (the rods being located, as above described, as the leg-frame and back-frame are made 5) and in order to allow the chairseat to be inserted,
its inner side rails t at the one end are forkshaped, as shown at o, and at the other end provided with a notch, p, on the under side or edge, the forked'shape being at the rear ends of said inner side rails i.
In locating the chairseat upon the rods lm it is rst placed by the rear forked ends of inner side rails upon the cross-rod M of the backframe, when, by simply allowing the front end to fall, it will, by the notches p of inner side rails t', come into place upon the cross-rod Z of the leg-frame, completing the setting of the chair-seat.
The advantages of my improved arrangement of rods l and m and construction of chairseat rails are, that an easy and ready insertion and removal of chair-seat is secured, and a strong and durable support of the seat is obtained across its entire width.
Previous to this invention the chair-seat Was simply hung upon pivots of the leg-frame and back-frame.
If deemed desirable, the chair-seat may be fastened in position on the rods l and m, either one or both, by closing their opennotches with straps or pins, as, for instance, shown at o", Fig. 1.
It may be well to here remark that, in lieu of foi-king7 the rear ends of side rails t', as described, they may be notched, as described, for the front ends; but it is preferable to fork them, as it allows the back edge of chair-seat to extend, as desired, under the lower edge of chair-back.
Having thus described my invention, I shall state my claim as follows:
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The rods l m, in combination with side rails t' of chair-seat, having notches o p, the swinging leg-frame e, and the swinging back-frame f, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
