Description
UNrTnD STATES PATENT @OFFICE EUGENE C. HOLTON, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO EDWARD W. VAILL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,920, dated J oly 18, 1876; application tiled March 1, 1876. i v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE C. HoL'roN, of Worcester, in the Stateof Massachusetts, have invented an Improvementin Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is a specification:
Folding chairs have been made with a back connected to the back legs, which back legs extend forward and receive the front part of the seat, and the front legs have been con-l nected to the back legs by links, and extended up and pivoted to the back.
My improvement consists in combining with a folding chair, substantially such as described, rockers and links, whereby the chair is converted into a rocking-chair, and also retains its folding properties.
By this improvement the space occupied by the folded rocking-chair is but little more than that occupied by the ordinary folding chair,
'and a very durable and firm rocking-chair is jupon which the seat-frame or seat rests, if
rigid.
a., and by the links 7c the front and back or back legs are connected. l Thesev links are preferably attached inside the back legs at o, and to the cross-rail r', upon which such back legs may rest when unfolded, if desired.
The front legs g are pivoted ath to the back The rockers s are pivoted at t to the lower ends of the front legs, and at the lower ends of the backlegs there are notches, so that theyv rest upon the cross-rail u between the rocliers s.
The links c are att-ached at their lower ends to the insides of the rockers, andvat their upper ends to the back legs c, and `they stand diagonally when the chair`is unfolded for use; hence, the weight of a person upon the seat tends to press the -back legs and rockers firmly together, and in rocking this chair there is no tendency for one part to move upon the other and make a noise.
When the chair is folded for transportation,
as in Fig. 3, the rockers turn up behind the back a a, and adjacent to the same, and occupy very little space. I I am aware that links have been used to connect the back legs and rockers, as in Letters Patent No. 172,785.
I claim as my invention- In combination with the legs of a folding chair, the rockers's, pivoted at t to the front legs, and the links c, connecting the back legs and rockers, and placed in a diagonal position by being pivoted lat their upper ends to the back legs, and at their lower ends to the rockers, at a point in front of the rest u, substantially as set forth. y
Signed by me this 18th day of February,
EUGENE C. HOLTON.
