Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICEo GIACOMO CHELINI, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.l
RECLINING-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,798, dated April 18, 1882.
Application filed March 14, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GIACOMO CHELINI, a subjectofthe KingofItaly, residing at Washington city, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful lmprov'ementsin Reclin- -ing` Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art lo which ita-ppcrtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom panying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, whch forms a part ot' this specification.
This invention is in the nature of improvements in reclining-chairs,7 so-called, and I have herein shown as one form of my invention the said improvements applied to a rocking-chair.
The improvements consist in a pivoted back extended below the seat and provided with a forward] y-projectin g hinged foot-rest adapted to engage with the front round of the chair to hold the back in position for use in sitting upright or reclining in the chair, theconstruction being substantially as hereinafter specitied and claimed.
The drawing shows in vertical section a rocking-chair embodying my invention, the upright position being indicated by full lines and the reclining position by dotted or broken lines.
A is the seat-frame of the chair, provided with the back B, pivoted at a therein, and both suitably upholstered. This back has its sides extended below the seat, and at its lower end has jointed thereto thel forwardly-projecting frame C. This frame lis provided with a series of notches, b, to engage with the round c of the chair to hold the back of the chair at various inclinations for use in sitting upright or in a reclining posture.
D is a footrest finished in` harmony with the other parts ot' chair, and pivoted in the frame C, and adapted to be reversed therein to present either of two surfaces uppermost, according to the position ot' the bach and the requirement of the occupant of the chair. O ne side, d, of this foot-rest maybe finished to correspond with the upholstering of the chair. This footrest is held in position in the frame C either by its top c overlying the sides of the frame, or stops fengaging a rod,g, on the frame. cWhen the back is inclined most it is further supported by its side bars abutting against stops It on the seat-frame.
The securing of the back of my chair in its various positions is eteoted by gravity, thus avoiding the use of special devices for throwing its parts into or out of engagement.
The arms of the chair may be curved rearwardly, as shown, to cover the space between the back and the seat when said back is iuclined. Y
The best mode of accommodating the surface of the scat to the inclination ofthe back is to make a sagging or flexible upholstering continuous from the front of the seat-frame to the top of the back, as at t'.
The chair may or may not be a rockingchair.
What I claim is- The combination, substantially as shown and described, of the chair-seat frame, a back hinged therein and extended below the seat, a jointed foot-restframe provided with notches, the front round of the chair, with which said notched frame engages, a reversible foot-rest in said frame, and stops for the back on the seat-frame, the wholeconstructed and arranged to operate as specified.
In testimony whereof I aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GIACOMO CHELINI.
