CHAIR SEAT Filed Feb. 2, 1925 l INVENTOR Edward Z'l'eefz ATTORNEY Patented Feb; 9, 192e.
EDVTARD T. BREEN, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
CHAIR SEAT.
l Application filed February 2, 1925.
To ZZ 'ur/lont may concern.'
lle it known that l", EDWARD Vl". Banani, a citizen vofthe United States, residing' at. New Haven, in the county of N ew Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain Chair Seats, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a new and improved chair seat for a folding chair or the the like.
Among the aiinsand objects of the invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character mentioned, which shall be of simple design, that maybe readily applied to a folding chair of the conventional type or in substitution of a worn seat or one to be removed for other reasons, wherein the seat portion will be rigidly supported at its edges, capable of lsustaining the maximum weight, and composed of few parts that combine to form a rigid structure that may be produced at the minimum cost.
The improven'ients in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the description hereinafter contained, and wherein af preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting an understanding` of the same.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the .several figures:
.Figure 1 is a perspective view of a folding chair having my improved chair seat connected therewith;
FigureQ is a rear view thereof;
Figure 3 is a side elevation thereof when partially folded;
Figure l is an enlarged plan view improved chair seat;
.Figure 5 is a side elevation thereof; and
Figure 6 is an enlarged sectional view thereof taken generally upon line -G of Figure fl.
ln the drawings, 10 and 11 are the front and rear legs respectively of a. folding chair; 12 is the back bar, forming part of the chair back 14, that extends between the upper ends of the front legs 10 and connected therewith by a rod 13. These parte are old and well known in. the art and constitute no part of my present invention.
My improved chair seat comprises a rod new and useful Improvements in of my Y Serial No. 6,312.
15 that is bent nearits outer ends at 16, so as to pass around and nndr the upper end Vof the front legs 1() and coiled Vat its outer ends to forn'i'the loops 17, through which 60 is projected the rod 13, whereby `a pivotal connection is formed with the chair. y
The frame 18 of the chairseat is constructed preferably of a single rod having two substantially parallel side portions thatl terminate'at theirionter free ends in the V loops 19, which encircle the rod 15 and provide a support at one end for the chair seat. These side portions are joined by the front bar 20, which is in a lower plane than the parallel side portions and connected therewith through the curved portions 21, spaced apart a less distance than the parallel side portions, substantially as'shown in Figure 4. These curved portions are of such size as to encircle and form a pocket for tl'ielrung 22 connecting the upper ends of the rear legs 11, in which it is seated when the chair is in its open position. v
Secured to the frame 18 is the seat por- 80 tion 23, which may be of leather, carpet, or 'Y other material, as may be desired, with the end 2li projecting in rear of the rod 15, which extends through a pocket 25 therein.
.ln practice myimproved chair sembled with the chair substantially as? shown in Figures 1, 2 and, by passing the rod 13 through the loops 17, `and back bar 12. n
When the chair is open, the rung 2Q is pro- 90 jected into .the curved portions 21 of the frame and thus locks the chair parts against.- accidental closing or collapse. irrespective of the weight that may be placednpon the chair, the seatk will not collapse or break as with a chair havingthe ordinary carpet seat, as the same is .supported upon all sides by a metal frame.
llhere are minor changes and alterations that may be made within my invention, and
it understood that I the exact construction I would therefore have do not limit myself to herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, whatl claini as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1- Y 1. In a. folding chair, a frame having sides and having a front rung, a seat frame hav- No ing a front part removably engaged with the rung and having sides formed with seat is as '85 eyes atrtheir rear ends a rod extended throughthe eyes and having its end portions extended rearwardly at approximately right angles and disposed on the inner faces ot' the elia-ir traine sides and then being extended outwardly and upwardly, and formed With eyes which are disposel on the outer faces of said chair frame sides7 a second rod extended through each oi' the said last named eyes and through each of the chair frame sides.
2. n a chair, a main traine having sides f and having a front rung, a seat 'liranie having a front. part removably engaged with the front rung', and 'having' sides formed with eyes7 a rod extended through said eyes and having its end portions disposed on opposite faces of the respective frame sides and means to pivotally connect` the extremiand Y ties o1y said end portions oi. the rod to the frame sides. l
3. In a folding; chair, a main 'frame having sides and having avfront rung, a Wire seat frame having an intermediate part thereof formed into hook shape to removably engage over and around said front rung and having its end' portions formed to provide sides for the seat frame, said end portions terminating` in eyes7 arod forming the rear of thev seat frame and passed through said. eyes, and means to pivotally to the sides of thomann' connect said rod A iframe, so as to pivot-ally support the vrear end ofthe seat frame from the inain t' aine ln testimony whereof,r l have hereunto aiiixed my signature.v y
