Description
(No Model.)
P. GEISMAN. GOMMODE Patented Mar. 24
.4 M W M M c m Q w I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDRIOK GEISMAN, OF CANTON, OHIO.
COMMODE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,067, dated. March 24, 1896.
Application filed March 29, 1894.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDRIOK GEISMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ganton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oommodes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the commode unfolded, except one of the side arms. Fig. 2 is a view showing a portion of the seat and back and one of the back arms, together with the top. Fig. 3 is a view showing the commode folded, except the door. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through line 00 m, Fig. 1.
The present invention has relation to commodes; and it consists in the diiferent parts and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the 1 claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the frame proper, which consists of the legs a. To the top of the frame is securely attached the seat B, which is constructed in the ordinary manner, except as to the attachment of my improvements. To the rear edge of the seat 13 is hinged the back 0, which back is formed of such a size that it will cover the seat when folded, as illustrated in Fig. 3. To the back 0 are securely attached the arms D, which arms are substantially of the form shown in the drawings. To the front ends of the arms D are hinged the extensions F, which extensions when brought into position to admit the back 0 to be folded down and on top of the seat B are folded back, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
For the purpose of limiting the backward movement of the back O the arms D are provided with the hooks or catches b, which hooks or catches engage the bottom or under sides of the plates 0, which plates are securely attached to the seat B. For the purpose of allowing the arms D and the extensions F to pass through the seat 13 as the back 0 is Serial No. 505,561. (No model.)
is brought into position to engage the hooks.
b with the plates 0, the extensions F are turned outward, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4. The bottom or under edges of the extensions F are formed of a greater length than the length of the openings d, thereby causing a portion of the extensions to overlap the seat B, thereby locking the back O against forward movement.
For the purpose of preventing the extensions F from marring the seat B as they are 7 turned back and forth the metal rods d are provided, which rods are so adjusted that their upper faces will come a little above the top of the seat.
The frame A is provided with the shelf G, which shelf is for the ordinary purpose. To the back part of the frame is hinged the door H. Y
The top or upper side of the back C may be upholstered, as illustrated, thereby providing a cushion, and at the same time adding to the appearance of the commode.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the frame A provided with the fixed seat B, the back 0 hinged to the seat, the arms D attached to the back, the extensions F hinged to the arms D, the hooks I) attached to the arms D, the plates c, the openings cl formed in the seat, the blocks d secured to the arms D, and the rods d secured to the seat, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
FREDRICK GEISMAN.
