GEORGE COLUMBUS STAROHER, OF HURST, WEST VIRGINIA.
COMBINATION-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,529, dated June 15, 1897. Application filed December 19, 1896. $erial No: 616,264. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE COLUMBUS STARCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hurst, in the county of Lewis and State of WVest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Chairs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in the construction of chairs; and the object is to provide a chair that can be conveniently converted into a roller or a rocking chair as well as a lounge or couch.
To these ends the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-numerals indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved chair organized as a rocker. Fig. 1 is a detached perspective detail View of the upper end of one of the front legs and the contiguous end of the arm to illustrate the manner of detaohably securing them together. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it converted into a roller-chair. Fig. 3 represents it employed as a lounge. Fig. 4 shows it as it appears when folded for transportation. Fig. 5 is a detail section of one end of the detachable brace in position on the contiguous rocker and with the pivoted button on the brace released from the locking-recess in the rocker. Fig. (3 is a similar view with the button engaging the recess to secure the brace in place, and Fig. 7 is a bottom perspective view of the end of said brace.
1 represents the seat, mounted on the rear legs 2 2 and the front legs 3 3, which are connectcd by the usual braces 4 4C, and the lower ends of the four legs are provided with the usual caster-rollers 5 5.
6 0 represent the back rails, which are socured to the upper ends of the rear legs by hinges 7 7, and the arms 8 8 are likewise secured to the back rails 6 6 byhinges 9 9. Their forward ends are rabbeted at 10 to snugly fit the vertical recesses 12 12 in the upper ends of the front legs 3 3, and when so engaged the free ends of the pivoted braces 13 13 are secured in transverse recesses 14: in the legs 3 3, as shown in Figs. 1. and 2. The outer ends of the arms 8 8 are provided with casterrollers 15 15, which rest upon the floor when the back is thrown down to form the lounge, (shown in Fig. 3,) and when in this position the arm-braces 13 13 are secured in the recesses 16 16 in the rear legs. I
17 17 represent dovetailed recesses in the arms 8 8, which receive the dovetailed tenons 18 18 on the outer end of a removable brace 19, which serves to support said arms when they are in use, as shown in Fig. 3.
20 20 are pivoted buttons on the brace 19, which engage the side or edge of the arms opposite to the recesses 17 17 and serve to retain the ends of the brace in the dovetailed recesses in the arms. This one brace 19 serves the double function of a lock for the arms when the chair is in the position shown in Fig. 3 and as a lock for the rockers when the chair is used as a rocker, as in Fig. 1.
21 21 represent the rockers, which are secured to the front and rear leg braces by hinges 22 22, which permit them to be turned up on edge to raise the legs of the chair clear of the floor.
23 23 are dovetailed recesses in the upper edge of said rockers to receive the dovetailed ends of the brace 19, thepivoted buttons on said brace engaging transverse recesses 24 in the sides of the rockers to retain said brace in place, while the brace itself holds the rockers in a comparatively rigid position parallel to each other.
When it is desirable to have the chair rest upon the casters, the brace 19 is removed and the rockers are folded under the chair horizontally and are secured in this position by the pivoted hooks 25, secured to the brace connecting the front legs.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, 1 do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described inyinvention,
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1S
A convertible chair, comprising the seat 1 mounted on the rear and front legs 2 3, provided with roller-casters 5, 5, the upper ends of the front legs provided with the vertical recesses 12 12, the back rails 6 6 secured to the upper ends of the rear legs 2 2 by hinges 7 7, the hinged arms 8, 8, secured to said back rails and provided with the rabbeted recesses 10 10, dovetailed recesses 17 17, and the caster-rollers 15 15, in combination with the GEORGE COLUMBUS STARCHER.
