FOLDING ROCKING-CHAIR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,677, dated September 26, 1899.

To all whom it may concern/.-

Be it known that I, DAVIESS B. WHITELY, of lVhitesville, in the county of Daviess and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Folding Rocking- Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an adjustable folding rocking chair adapted for use in different places and for different purposes; and it consists, essentially, of a specific form of slotted and adjustable frame movable supports, braces, and intermediate connections.

Theinvention further consists of the details of construction and arrangement of the sevand operation, strong and durable, and readily adjusted.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rocking-chair embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same on the line a m, Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of a part of the chair. Fig. 4: is a side elevation of a modified form of construction, showing the seat and back formed by a continuous web. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the rear portion of a chair, showing a further modification. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a further modification of the chair.

Referring to the drawings, wherein similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views, the numeral 1, Figs. 1' and 2, designates rockers of any preferred form of construction and having pivotally attached thereto the opposite bars 2 of an adjustable frame 3. The rear ends of the said bars 2 are removably attached to the inner sides of the rear portions of the rockers 1 by a round 4, and at their front ends the bars 2 are connected to each other by a round 5. The rear portions of the said bars 2 are formed with transverse slots 6 in their upper edges, arranged at a slight angle of inclination, and the under sides of the front portions thereof have notches 7 therein and pins 8, projectinginwardly therefrom, adjaoent to the said notches 7. At the front of the chair are a pair of supports 9, connected to the inner sides of the front end of the rockers by a round 10 and of themselves attached to each other by a brace-round 11. As shown in Fig. 3, the supports 9 have at their outer ends outwardly-extending upwardly-projecting'keepers 12, which bear against the outer sides of the bars 2 to retain the upper ends of the said supports in engagement with the notches 7, and to the inner sides of the said supports catches 13 are movably connected and are adapted to engage the inwardly-extending pins 8 on the said bars 2 to lock the said supports in their adjusted position. To the bars 2, near their front ends, are attached the lower ends of arm-supports 14, and on the upper ends thereof are niovably-supported arm-rests 15, having broad pieces or strips 16, secured on the upper edges thereof to provide extended surfaces. The rear ends of the armrests are attached to the side bars 17 of a back 18, the lower ends of said bars being also movably secured to the bars 2 of the frame 3 and of themselves attached to each other by crossslats 19 at the upper and lower portions thereof,with an intermediate upholsterin g or other covering 20. To the said side bars 17 of the back and above the points Where the armrests 15 are attached brace-arms 21 are movably secured and are connected at their lower ends by a round 22, which is adapted to engage the slots 6 in the side bars 2 of the frame 3to hold the back in adjusted position at varying angles and in accordance with the said slots 6 engaged by the said round 22. The seat in this form of device is supported by the round 5, connecting the front ends of the said bars 2 of the frame 3, and comprises 0ppositely-disposed side bars 23 and end bars 24, let into the said side bars, and from the rear end bar extends a Web 25, running up to the lower slat 19 of the back 18 to support the lower portion of the back between the slat and the seat. The said back and seat can be suitably upholstered or cushioned. and form a convenient and comfortable rest and permit the occupant to recline.

If the parts of the chair are adjusted suffioientlyto lower the back, a couch or bed-chair is provided, and all the parts being pivotally attached the supports 9 and braces 21 when disconnected permit the several parts to be folded in compact form.

In Fig. 4: a slight modification of the construction is shown, and therein the seat and back are connected to each other and the said seat supported by meansof a back web 26. The holding devices of the rear surface of the bar in this instance are also modified and consist of plates carrying forwardly-projecting hooks to engage the lower portion ofthe brace-arms 21.

In Fig. 5 a still further modification is shown, and in this instance the side bars 27 of the back have enlargements or cars 28 projecting rearwardly, to which a pair of yoked arms 29 are movably attached and converge at their lower ends and connected by crosspins 30. The frame 3 in this instance is also supplied with a central rack-bar 31, located at the rear and supported by fiat cross-bars 32, the said rack-bar taking the place of the slots (Sin the side bars 2 in the construction heretofore set forth. This rack-bar extends longitudinally of the chair, and in operation the lower pin 30 of the yoke-arms 29 engages the rack-bar to support the back of the chair at varying elevations. The flat cross-bars 32 hold the rack-bar 31 rigidlyand against movement, and in other respects this form of chair will be the same as that shown by Fig. 1.

In Fig. 6 the bars 2 have their front ends resting on a cross-rod 33, mounted in the supports 9. The said supports 9 are hinged at their lower ends to the rockers l and connected by a loose joint at their upper ends to the arm-rests 15. The said'arm-rests are extended at the rear and have the brace-arms 21 secured directly thereto: In this instance also the arms are slotted, as at 34, and therein extend pins 35, projecting from the sides of the back, and are held in place by catches 35, secured to the arm-rests and adapted to turn over said slots. The inner sides of the supports 9 have cam-buttons 36 attached thereto to hold the front ends of the bars 2 depressed. The bars 2 in this instance are also slotted at the rear, and the arms 21 have a lower round 22 to engage said bars. In this form of the device the seat will be automatically adjusted with the back. The said seat and back are not shown in this figure, but will consist, preferably, of a continuous web of materiahwhich will be adjusted by the movements of the parts to which it is attached.

The chair as thus described can be ornamented and constructed of any suitable materialeither entirely of wood or a composition of wood and metal, as found desirable.

A suitable foot-rest is also intended to be attached to the front portion of the chair, and this may be of any preferred or wellknown form of construction.

It is obviously apparent that many minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the several parts might be made and substituted for those shown and described without in the least departing from the nature or spirit of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a chair, the combination of rockers, a frame movably attached thereto provided with slots and notches, a back having sup-- ports adj ustably engaging the rear of the said frame, supports attached to the front parts of the rockers and engaging the front of said frame, pins projectinginwardly from the front portion of the frame, catches carried by the said supports to engage said pins, and a seat and arms, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

2. In a chair of the character set forth, the combination of a seat, a frame having front and rear engaging devices, a pair of rockers to which the said frame is movably attached, supports movably connected to the front portion of the rockers and adjustably engaging the opposite front portions of the said frame, a back having side bars movably attached to the said frame, and arm-rests movably connected to the said frame and side bars of the back, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

3. In a chair, the combination of a pair of rockers, aframe movably attached to the rear of said rockers, supports adj ustably connected to the front of the rockers and movably engaging the front portion of said frame, a seat and back attached to said frame, arm-rests movably attached to the frame and back, and an adjustable support movably depending from the back and adapted to engage the rear portion of the frame, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

In a chair, the combination of a pair of rockers, a frame pivotally attached to the rear portion thereof andconsistin g of opposite side bars connected at rear and front by rounds and having slots in the rear upper edges and notches in the frontlower edges, supports attached to the front ends of the rockers by a round extending from one to the other and having their upper ends movably engaging the notches in the lower front portion of the said side bars, pins extending inwardly from the front portions of said side bars, catches movably attached to the said supports and engaging the said pins, a seat and back movably secured to the said frame, arm-rests adjustably attached to the said frame and back, and an adjustable support depending from the rear of the back to movably engage the rear slots of the said frame, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
