IMPROVEMENT IN EASVCHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,984, dated May 21, 1872.
' spending parts.
This invention relates to a new manner of `locking the hinged back of an easy-chair at a :suitable inclined-position, and also to a novel arrangement of foot-rest for the same. The invention consists, first, in the use of a hook at the lower end of the arm-rest support to lock over a series of pins formed in the slotted side rails of the chair; and, secondly, in the arrangement of a jointed foot rest, which, when not used, can be folded out of the way, and out of sight under the seat, and locked by a springcatch.
Ain the drawing represents the lower rigidpart of a chair comprising the front and back legs, the front and back rails, and the side rails a, af. B is the chair-back, connected by hinges b b with the chair-body A, said hinges being of suitable construction. rJhe arm-rests C are pivoted at d tothe chair-back, and are in front notch. The lower part of the post D fits into a groove or slot of the side rail a underneath, upon one of a series of pins, e e, which are transversely secured across the slot or groove of said railA When the notched end of the post is locked to one ot' the pins e, as indicated, the chair-back will also he locked, and if the back is to be more or less reclined the post D is merely lifted oft' the pin e which held it, and locked to another further back or in front. By this means a very simple means of adjusting the chair-back is obtained. F is the foot-rest, composed of three or more boards hinged together, and the uppermost board hinged to the front of the chair. The lower board has supporting-braces f pivoted to it in slots, whereby it can be held more or less high above the door. The whole foot-rest can be carried out, as in Fig. l, and more or less inclined, by means of the braces f; or it may, when not used, be folded partly against the front, partly beneath the chair, as in Fig. 2, and locked in this position by a spring-catch, g.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. lhe hinged back B joined to the arm-rest C, and combined with the notched supports D, and with the pins e in the slotted rails a, as
`set forth.
2. The jointed foot-rest provided with the pivoted braces f, and arranged on a chair, in
combination with the spring-catch g, substantially as herein shown and described.
