Description
T. A. 10 H NSE N.
Foot Rest for Chairs.
Patentd July 27.1875;
N-FETERS, PHOTO-'LIYHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON D c.
UNITED STATES ATE.
, THEODORE A. JOHNSEN, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOOT-RESTS FOR CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,932, dated July 27, 1875 application filed June 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, THEODORE A. J oHNsEN, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Rests for Chairs 5 and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The drawing shows a sectional elevation of a portion of a chair with my improvement thereto attached in Figure 1, and in Fig. 2 a sectional view of the track with the stud of the supporting-arm therein.
Same letters show like parts.
The object of my invention is to produce a foot-rest to be attached to chairs and seats, which rest is capable of being adjusted to several elevations and inclinations, and when not in use capable .of being folded and moved under the bottom of the seat of the chair.
a shows the frame of the chair; 1), its legs. 0 is an inclined track, having the slot (1, and attached to the chair at e f. There is one of these tracks at or near each side of the chair, and underneath of the bottom of the seat thereof. The drawing shows an inside view of one of these tracks. Working in these tracks are the supporting-arms g. These have the studs h to fit into the slots at, and the arms t'to bear up against a top flange of the track a, and thus hold the foot-rest when extended, as in Fig. 1. The flange is shown atj, Fig. 2. The arm g is bent substantially in the form shown in the drawing, and is fastened to the bottom frame k of the foot-rest. l is the foot-rest, and it is attached to the bottom frame It by means I of a staple, m, working in an eye, a.
This device permits of the backward and forward movement of the foot-rest, and at the same time keeps it pivoted to the bottom frame is. Also attached to the bottom of the footrest is the hinged piece 0, having a stud, p, which slides in a slot in the bottom frame 75.
The supporting-arms 9 may have different elevations, and so raise the foot-rest to different heights by slipping the studs q into the recesses r.
The operation is apparent. The foot-rest may draw back slightly, so as to lie flat on the bottom frame 70.
The rest and supporting-arms may be then moved back between the tracks 0, and under the seat of the chair.
The foot-rest may also be drawn out, and then arranged to either of the positions hereinbefore described.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The foot-rest, as described, supported upon the bent arm 9, having the two extensions, one in the slot of the track a, the other on the bottom plate 76, and capable of different elevations by means of the hinged piece 0, the stud q, and recesses r, the whole. operating substantially as herein described.
2. The combination of the slotted track 0, with the bent arm 9, having the stud h to slide in the slot 01, in order to permit of the backward and forward, and upward and downward, movement of the foot-rest, as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THEO. A. J OHNSEN.
