LEG-REST FOR CHAIRS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 3611804, dated April 26, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J OHAN M. BABKA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leg-Rests for Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair, showing leg-rest extended and the seat broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the chairseat and leg-rest, showing the position of the leg-rest when not in use. Fig. 3 is a detached View of the rock-bar and operating-lever. Fig. 4 is a detached View of the retaining-catch.

The present invention has relation to legrests for chairs; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the draw- 1ngs.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the chair, which may be of any desired kind or style.

B represents the leg-rest, which may be substantially of the form shown in the drawings, and, as shown, it is formed somewhat narrower than the seat of the chair, for the purpose hereinafter described.

. To the front or forward end of the leg-rest B are securely attached the legs a a, the bottom or lower ends of the legs a a being provided with the casters 1).

To the cross-bar G is hinged the front or forward edge of the seat D, substantially as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the rear end of said seat be ing left free to move up and down, for the purpose hereinafter described. To the side pieces, E, is pivotally attached the rock-bar F, said rock-bar being located substantially as shown in Fig. 2. This rock-bar F is provided with the arms 0, to which arms are pivotally attached the connecting-bars d. The top or upper ends of these connecting-bars d are pivotally attached to the under side of the seat D, said bars being located substantially as shown Application filed February 4, 1887. in Fig. 2. On each side of the leg-rest B is located a spring, G, said springs being located I beneath the seat D. The bottom or lower ends of these springs G rest on the strip K, and are so arranged that they will hold the seat in the position shown in Fig. 2 when the chair is not occupied. To the front or forward portion of the chair proper is pivotally attached the catch-bar H, said catch-bar being substan-. tially of the form shown in Fig. 4., and is provided with the extension or arm 6, and is for the purpose of entering the aperture f when the leg-rest is in the position shown in Fig. 2. The outer end of the catch-bar H is provided with the handle or knob 9, said handle or knob being made heavy enough to cause the v inner end of the catch-bar H to engage the aperture f automatically.

It will be seen that as the rear end of the seat D is forced downward it will cause the arm I to be thrown forward, carrying with it the connectiongrod J, said connecting-rod being pivotally attached to the front or forward end of the leg-rest B, substantially as shown in Fig. 2, thereby placing the leg-rest B in the position shown in Fig; 1.

In use, when it is desired to have the legrest in the position shown in Fig. 1, the catch bar H is detached by an upward movement of the handle or knob g, and the rear portion of the seat D pressed downward. It will be seen that when the seat D is free it will be forced upward by means of the springs G, thereby automatically placing the leg-rest B in the position shown in Fig. 2, when it will be locked by means of the catch-bar H. For the purpose of guiding the leg-rest B, strips h are placed under the leg-rest, and the pin t moves between the guides. These guides are attached at their front or forward ends to the cross-bar C, and the rear ends are attached to the rear cross-bar.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters ICO ' the connecting-bars d, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. The combination of the leg-rest B, the guides h, the pin i, springs G, the connectingrod J, the arm I, the rock-bar F, arms 0, and bars (1, whereby the leg-rest is extended by the depression of the seat, substantially as set [5 forth.
