IMPROVEMENT IN BARBERS AND DENTISTS CHAIRS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,782, dated January 30, 1877; application filed November 21, 1876.
I To all whom at may concern:
' bers and Dentists Chairs; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, anp exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a barbers or dentists chair with my improvements attached. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
The object of my invention is to produce a chair which can be conveniently tilted by the operator to any desired position, and retained there; and the invention consists in certain combinations of mechanical devices, as hereinafter more specifically described and claimed.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A represents the base of the chair, having the seat B pivoted at a, or any convenient point, so as to allow it to be tilted at pleasure. Attached to the front of the seat B at e is a coiled spring, E, havin g its oppositeend attached at the base A at b. This spring holds the seat B in its normal condition-down upon the stops i. Pivoted to the baseAat f is a lever, 0, provided with the link D, and having the foot-piece K. The upper end of the link D is pivoted to the seat at a point, h, back of the pivot a. Passing along a groove in one of the back-supports is arod, F, having its lower end pivoted at g, and its upper end provided with a rack, m, to engage with the catch G at the desired moment.
The operation is as follows When the foot presses down the treadle O the rear of the seat is brought down by means of the link D, and the spring E becomes extended, as seen in Fig. 2. The bar F passes up the groove in the back-support until one of the notches in the rack catches upon the catch G, and the seat is retained in any desired position. To return the chair-seat to its normal position, the catch is released by pressing on the hand-piece n, and the spring E forces down the chair-seat upon the stops 6.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a barbers or dentists chair, the combination of the pivoted seat B with spring E, treadle 0, link D, and pivoted retaining-bar F, provided with a rack, and the catch G, all constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
