MPETERS, PHDTO-LITNQGRAPHER, WkSHINGTON D C- UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIGE.
GEORGE GREMS AND LEONARD I. FOWLE, OF FREDERICKSBURG, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,664, dated January 4, 1876; application filed August 21, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE GREMs and LEONARD I. FowLE, of Fredericksburg, in the county of Chickasaw and State of Iowa, haveinvented a new and Improved Adjustable Seat-Back, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists of a back-piece independent of the ordinary back, and located above it, and connected by bars to the front of the ordinary arms, so as to swing up and down, and having ratchet-braces extending from the back down through an eye-piece attached to the bottom of the chair, and having a lever-pawl to hold the back at any height, all making a simple and easily-adjustable seat-back, which may be used with or without the ordinary back.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of our improved chair, taken on line m a: of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 2 is a plan with a part of the bottom broken out.
Similar letters of .reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the adjustable back, which is located over the top of the ordinary back B, and connected by bars 0 with the arms D near the front, so as to swing freely up and down, and having the ratchet-braces E extending down from it through holes in a plate, F, attached to the under side of the seat-bottom, and havinga shaft, G, on which is a pawl or dog, H, for each brace, and a lever, l, for swinging the pawls out of the notches when the back is to be lowered. The lever projects forward from the-shaft, so as to be readily reached from the front when it is desired to adjust the back. The shaft on which the pawls are is fixed in bearings in the plate, so as to turn sufficiently to work the pawls, and the shaft affords a firm rest for the ratchet-braces.
Having thus described our invention, we
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of adjustable back A, bars G, ratchet-bars E, shaft G, pawls H, and the lever I with a chair or other seat, substantially as specified.
GEORGE GREMS.
LEONARD I. FOWLE.
