Description

March 10, 195.3 c. MALCO 2,630,855
CONTOUR CHAIR WITH HINGEDLY MOUNTED BACK PAD Filed April 26, 1952 Patented Mar. 10, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CONTOUR CHAIR WITH HINGEDLY MOUNTED BACK PAD This invention relates to a contour chair which.
has a back pad which normally rests against the padded back portion of the chair and the back pad may be moved from its normal resting position against the back of the chair'to a position elevated from the seat of the chair and forwardly of its normal position. In this manner a contour chair may be provided in which the legs of the user are elevated as he reclines in the chair.
An object of my invention is to provide a contour chair in which the back pad of the chair is mounted on the side arms and these side arms in turn are pivotally attached to the frameof the chair so that the back pad may be" swung forwardly from its normal position and also in a position above the level of the seat of the chair.
Another feature of my invention is to provide a novel contour chair of the character stated, in which the back of the chair is padded as well as the auxiliary back so that either or both may be used with comfort.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of my con-tour chair with the auxiliary back pad in position resting against the back of the chair.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same showing the auxiliary back pad swung forwardly and elevated above the seat of the chair.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of a slightly modified form of contour chair in which the back pad also includes a portion of the seat of the chair.
Figure 4 is a side view of the modification shown in Figure 3, and with the auxiliary back pad swung forwardly.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of still another modified form of contour chair in which the auxiliary back pad is slidably and hingedly mounted.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the modification shown in Figure 5 and with the auxiliary back pad swung forwardly.
Figure 7 is a side view of one of the hinges employed in my contour chair.
Figure 8 is a top plan View of one of the hinges.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral I indicates the usual chair frame or base which also includes the usual supporting legs 2. The seat portion 3 of the chair is padded or upholstered in the usual and well known manner. A back 4 may be either fixedly or pivotally attached to the frame I, as shown at 5.
The front surface of the back is padded or upholstered to provide a comfortable surface upon which to lean when this back is being used alone without the auxiliary pad.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, an auxiliary pad I 6 conforms in general contour to the back 4 and normally rests against this back, as shown in Figure l. The auxiliary pad 6 is upholstered or padded so that it also provides a comfortable surface upon which to lean or rest. Normally, the auxiliary pad 6 is resting against the chair back 4 and extends the full length of this back from top to bottom, or substantially so.
When it is desired to use the chair as a contour type, the following structure is employed:
The side arms I are fixedly secured at one end to the back pad 6. At the other end the arms are pivotally secured to the frame I of the chair as shown at 8. This hinge is preferably of the adjustable or friction type, including a central pivot bolt 9, a nut III, which screws on to this bolt, the bolt clamping the plates or rings II against the hinged arms I2, thus holding the hinge in any desired adjusted position. When the chair is used as a contour chair, the pad 6 is swung forwardly by pivoting the arms I around the pivots 8 and the hinges are clamped to secure the desired position of the pad 6 which now becomes a foot or leg rest.
When not in use as a contour type of chair, the back pad 6 rests against the back 4 and the arms I are then used in a normalmanner.
In the modification shown in Figures 3 and 4, the back pad I3 also includes a lower portion I4 which is a part of the seat of the chair. The portion I4 is the rear section of the chair seat when the pad I3 is in normal position, resting against the back 4. The back I3 is again fixedly attached to the side arms I5 and these side arms are pivotally mounted on the frame I 01 the chair by the pivots I6, which may be of the same construction as the hinge or pivot 8. When the chair is used as a contour type, the arm IS with its attached back or auxiliary pad I3 is swung forwardly, as shown at I4, thus providing an elevated rest for the feet or legs of the user. In normal position, the front surface of the auxiliary pad I3 i upholstered or padded to provide a comfortable surface against which to rest.
In the modification shown in Figures 5 and 6, the auxiliary back pad I1 is pivotally secured to the frame I of the chair, as shown at I 8, and this hinge or pivot I8 is slidable horizontally in a slot l9 formed in the frame I of the chair. When it is desired to use the chair as a contour type, the parts are arranged as shown in Figure 6, the back pad H is moved forwardly in the slot l8 and is then pivoted forwardly to a further extent by adjusting the hinge or pivot l8. Again, the hinge or pivot [8 can he of the clamping type as shown in Figures 7 and 8.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A contour chair with hingedly mounted back pad comprising a frame, legs depending from the frame, a padded seat on the top of the frame, a back rising from the frame, the front. of: the said back being padded, an auxiliary pad resting against the back in one position thereof, an arm attached to the auxiliary pad on each side thereof, the outer end of said arms being pivotally mounted on said frame, said auxiliary pa d being movable forwardly of the, back of the chair and in a plane above the seat of the chair.
2. A contour chair with hingedly mounted back pad comprising a frame, legs dependinglfrom the frame, a padded seat on the top-0f the frame, a back rising from the frame, means pivotallyat:- taching the back to: the frame, an auxiliary pad resting against the back in one. position of the pad, an arm fixedly attached to each side of the auxiliary pad, and means pivotally securing the outer end of each of the arms to the frame of the chair.
3. A contour chair with hingedly mounted back pad comprising a frame, legs depending from the. frame, a padded seat on the top of the, frame, a. back rising from the frame, means pivotally attaching the, back to the frame, an auxiliary pad resting against the back in one position of the pad, an arm fixedly attached to each side of the auxiliary pad, and means pivotally securing the outer end of each of the arms to the frame of the chair, said last named means including an adjustable and clamping hinge whereby the auxiliary pad may be variably adjusted relative to the back and the seat of the chair.
4. A contour chair with hingedly mounted hack pad comprising a frame, legs depending from the frame, a, padded seat on the top of the frame, a back, means hingedly securing the back to the frame, the front of said back being padded, an auxiliary back pad, said auxiliary back pad extending partially across the seat of the chair and forming the back of said seat in one position of the auxiliary pad, an arm secured each side of the auxiliary pad and mean pivotally securing each of the arms to the frame of the chair.
5\ A contourchair with hingedly mounted back pad comprising a frame, legs depending from the frame, a padded seat on the top of the frame, a back rising from the frame, the front of said back being padded, an auxiliary pad resting against the, back in one position of said pad, and means mounting said auxiliary pad on the frame for both pivotal and horizontal: movement relative to. said frame.
