An adjustable reclining chair &c. comprising a structure including a seat and a back rest rockably mounted on a support is characterized in that the structure includes a constrained linkage with a controlling bar pivoted to a movable link and to a controlling arm pivoted to the seat and that means are interposed between the controlling arm and a leg rest swingably mounted on the front end of the seat for effecting movements of the leg rest in co-ordination with the controlling arm. As shown the back rest 18 pivoted to the support 10 at 22 has a downward extension 20 to which is pivoted one end of a connecting link 34, the other end being pivoted at 32 to a front connecting link 28 which is also pivoted to the seat 24 at 30. The seat 24 is pivoted to the support 10 at 26 and a guiding link 38 is pivoted to the support 10 at 42 and to the connecting link at 40. The leg rest 44 is pivoted at 46 to the seat 24 and to a controlling link 50 at 48. The controlling link 50 is pivoted to a controlling arm 54 which is pivoted to the seat 24 at 56 and to a controlling bar 58 pivoted to an extension 40 of the guiding link 38. The described mechanism ensures a comparatively fast upward movement of the leg rest during the first part of the movement of the back rest and seat into the reclined position. Various modifications are described in the Specification wherein the controlling elements are pivoted to different elements of the linkage and wherein means are provided for blocking the linkage whereby the elements of the moving parts are automatically blocked in fixed position relatively to each other after a predetermined movement of the back rest and seat and whereby the system is then movable as a whole to the extreme reclined position.
