Class 52(ii) An adjustable reclining chair wherein a seat, a back rest and a portion of the seat support are included in a constrained complex linkage having movable links and at least one stationary link is characterized in that a controlling link, pivoted at its rear end to a movable link and, forwardly thereof, to a member swingably mounted on the front part of the seat, has an extension which is pivoted to a leg rest or to a part of a leg rest which is in slidable connection with the swingable member whereby the leg rest or the part thereof may be moved away from the seat when the movable members of the chair are brought from the sitting position into the reclining position. As shown in Fig. 1 the seat 28 is pivoted at each side to the support 20 at 30 on which pivot is also mounted a link 32 rigidly connected to the back rest 34. The link 32 is pivoted at 36 to a connecting link 38 which is pivoted at 40 to a front connecting link 42 pivoted at 44 to the seat 28. Pivoted also to the support 20 at 48 is a guiding link 46 pivoted to the connecting link 38 at 50 and having an extenison 60 pivoted at 62 to a controlling link 58. The controlling link 58 is pivoted to the leg rest 68 at 66 and also to a swingable member 52 which at one end is pivoted to the seat at 54 and has at the other end a slot 72 in slidable engagement with a pin 70 on the leg rest 68. When the occupant, by weight transference, moves the chair from sitting position shown in full lines to full reclining position shown in dotted lines the leg rest 68 is moved to position 68<SP>1</SP> and in the process is moved forwardly to a greater distance from the seat than is normal in sitting position. The linkage may be arranged in various arrangements. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement wherein the seat 128 and back rest 134 are pivoted at points 130, 131 on the support 120 spaced from one another and the leg rest is in two parts 167, 169 slidably connected to one another, the controlling link 158 being pivoted to the swingable member 152 at, 156 which swingable member is rigidly connected to the upper part 167 of the leg rest while the extension 164 of the controlling link 158 is pivoted at 190 to a bar 186 secured to the lower part 169 of the leg rest whereby as the chair moves from sitting position to reclining position the lower part 169 of the leg rest moves away forwardly from the upper part 167 of the leg rest.
