Class 52(2) In a reclining chair of the type in which a body supporting structure is movably mounted in a support and movement thereof to reclining position actuates a linkage which projects a leg-rest to extended position, the linkage includes two pairs of links, each pair being pivoted together, the links of the first pair being pivoted to the support and the leg-rest respectively and the links of the second pair being pivoted to intermediate points of the links of the first pair. As shown in Fig. 1, a back rest 16 and seat 22 are mounted on a support 10 by a common pivot 20. The first pair of links 38, 84 are pivoted together at 36 and respectively to the support 10 and the leg-rest 48 at 40, 50. The second pair of links 26, 30 are pivoted together at 28 and respectively to a downward extension 18 of the back rest and link 34 at 24, 32. Rearward movement of the back rest causes link 26 to swing the linkage about pivot 40 and link 34 projects the leg-rest. During this motion a link 44 lifts the seat 22. The motion of the leg-rest is controlled by a link 54 pivoted at 56 to the front of the seat and having a telescopic connection 52 with the leg-rest. In a modification, Fig. 2, the movement of the legrest is controlled by a link 158 pivoted to the front of the seat at 160 and to a link 168 at 166, link 168 being pivoted to the leg-rest at 170 and link 158 having a pin- and-slot connection 162 with link 134. The seat is raised either by a link 144 or by an upward extension of link 130, Fig. 3 (not shown). As shown in Fig. 4, an integral back rest and seat structure 374 is pivoted at 321 to the support. The first pair of links 338, 334 are pivoted to the support and leg-rest respectively at 340, 350. The second pair of links 326, 330 are pivoted to the first pair and the rear end of link 326 is pivoted at 325 to the foot of link 376 pivoted to the support at 378. Rearward pivoting of structure 374 causes a link 382 to swing link 376 about pivot 378 and this makes link 326 swing link 338 about pivot 340 so that link 334 extends the leg-rest. A link 386 pivoted to link 330 and to the leg-rest controls the movement of the latter. As shown in Fig. 5, the structure 474 is pivoted at 423 to the support at a low level and the linkage is pivoted about pivot 440 through a bellcrank 492. Movement of the leg-rest is controlled by links 406, 454 pivoted respectively to the leg-rest and the front of structure 474 at 409, 456 and both having telescopic connection with a member 498 pivoted at 404 to the link 434 which extends the leg-rest. Stops may be provided to limit the pivoting in the sitting and reclining positions, and means may be provided for locking the parts in adjusted position. Specification 814,607 is referred to.
