Class 52(2) In a reclining chair having a back rest and seat structure rockably mounted on a support and a leg-rest extended automatically as the structure is rocked rearwardly the leg-rest is actuated by a lazytong linkage one inner end of which is pivoted to the support and the other inner end of which is actuated by the structure. As shown in Fig. 1, the lazy-tongs consist of two pairs of links 40, 44 and 32, 30. The latter pair carries the leg-rest 52 on a pivot 56 and a pivoted link 60. The inner ends of links 40, 44 are pivoted respectively to the support 10 at 42 and to a downward extension 20 of the back rest 16 at 46. Tilting back of the back rest 16 causes link 44 to swing link 40 about pivot 42 whereupon a link 48 moves the seat 22 and the lazy-tong linkage extends the leg-rest. As shown in Fig. 2 (not shown), the seat is raised by an upward extension of link 32. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the seat is raised by a link pivoted both to the front of the seat and to the forward part of link 30. As shown in Fig. 4, the lazy-tong linkage consists of pairs of links 340, 344 and 332, 330 and is pivoted to the support at 342. The inner end of link 344 is pivoted at 372 to the foot of link 374 pivoted at 376 to the support. The back rest and seat are formed as an integral unit 368 pivoted to the support at 370 and, when tilted rearwards, a downward extension 384 thereof, acting through a link 378, swings the link 374 and actuates the lazy-tongs to extend the leg-rest. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the back rest and seat unit is pivoted at the foot of extension 384 to the support and a link and bell crank actuate the lazy-tong linkage. In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the rear part of the back rest and seat unit merely bears on one end of a bell crank, the other arm of which actuates the lazy-tong linkage. Stops may be provided to limit the pivoting in the sitting and reclining positions, and means may be provided for locking the parts in adjusted position. Specification 815,713 is referred to.
