Abstract

847,170. Seats. LORENZ, A. June 6, 1958 [June 19, 1957], No. 18105/58. Class 52(2) Relates to two linkages for supporting the seat 4 and back 5 of a reclining chair on support frame 1 in such manner that the seat and back can tilt as a unit from an upright to a tilted position and then the back can be tilted relative to the seat (which also moves further) to a full reclining position. As shown in Figs 1-3, the seat 4 has a rigid extension 7 pivoted at 8'to the back 5 and abutting a stop 9 thereon. The back is supported on the frame by a link 10 pivoted to the latter at 12 and to the former at 11 while the seat is supported by a link 16 pivoted thereto at 17 and pivoted at its lower end at 18 to a suspension link 19 pivoted at 20 to the frame 1. In the upright position (Fig. 1) the pivot 18 rests on a fixed frame member 2 and as the chair is moved to the tilted position (Fig. 2) links 16, 10 swing about pivots 18, 12 respectively and the seat and back move as a unit with extension 7 in contact with stop 9. The linkage is in effect a four bar linkage constituted by: 1, the frame 1 between pivots 18, 12; 2, the link 16; 3, the seat 4, extension 7 and the back between pivots 8, 11; and 4, the link 10. The tilted position is reached when movement of links 16, 10 about pivots 17, 12 is arrested by abutment with stops 15, 13. On movement to the reclining position of Fig. 3, the back 5 tilts about pivot 11 thus removing stop 9 from extension 7 and the seat is drawn rearwards causing link 19 to swing about pivot 20, the front part of the seat being thus raised. The linkage now acts as a different four bar linkage as follows: 1, the frame between pivots 20 and 10 and the link 10; 2, the link 19; 3, link 16, seat 4 and extension 7; and 4, the back 5 between pivots 8, 11. During movement to tipped and reclining positions, the back 5 projects a leg rest 6 through link 24, two-armed lever 21, link 27 and toggle 29, 32. Pivot 28 abuts link 16 in the position of Fig. 1 to prevent forward pivoting of links 16. In a modified form, Fig. 6, the seat 4 has a rigid depending part 40 pivoted to a suspending link 42. During movement to tilted position, extension 7 is in contact with abutment 9 and the back tilts about pivot 45 but during movement to reclining position, the back tilts about pivot 46. The leg rest 6 is extended by an actuating link 55 pivoted thereto, the leg rest being guided by a lever 59 pivoted to the seat and having a telescopic connection 61 with the rest, rollers 62 being provided.
