Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
H. HOWARD GRATZ, OF LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAWN-SETTEES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,421, dated March 2, 1875 applicat'on filed June 9, 1874.
To all whom t'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, H. HOWARD GRATZ, of Lexington, in the county of Fayette and in the State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn-Seat and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a lawn-bench with a close cover, to protect the seat from moisture, and also for forming a back to the seat, as will be set forth.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents the body of the bench, as seen in perspective and end view. This body can be made in any of the known and usual ways. B represents a stationary back, secured to it in any suitable manner, and braced by the rods 0 G. D represents a solid back, which is hinged to the frame at the junction of the stationary back with the frame and seat. This back D turns upon its hinge, and either makes a back in addition to the stationary back, lying against it, or drops on the seat, either forming a seat, or protecting the slatted seat from rain or snow or dew or moisture of any kind. The proper seat of the bench is composed of slats, and a portion of these slats are connected together at the ends by means of bars, which bars are pivoted orhinged to the seat, or to one of the slats of the seat, as seen at c. This slatted bottom has beneath it a box to contain such articles as may be convenient or necessary to place in it.
As a usual thing the bottom or movable back D lies upon the slatted bottom, to protect it from moisture; but when the bench is being used it is turned up, and forms the back of the bench.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a lawn-seat, of a body, A, having a slat seat, a, a stationary back, B, and a solid back, D, hinged at its lower edge to lie against the back or upon the slat scat, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of May, 1874.
V H. HOWARD GRATZ. Witnesses:
