Description

` s. HA. AMmON. Stay Braes for Trunk Lids.
Patented Marh 26,1872.
VLids; and I do hereby declare the following to by like letters.
brace for trunk-lids; and it consists of the parts v within mortises cut therein, metallic cases or `wise fastened thereto at la la. The cases a a `so constructing said openings being to form NITED STATES PATENT SOEFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN STAY-BRACES FOR TR'UNKLIDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,999, dated March 26, 1872.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. H. AMIDON, of Mil-A lers Falls, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stay-Braces for Trunkbe a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the acco mpanyingdrawing forming a part of the same, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of a` trunk with my invention applied thereto, the lid of the former being shown in an elevated position. Fig. 2 represents an end view of my invention and a section of the trunk taken through the line w of Fig. 1, to which it is applied; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken through the dotted line y y of Fig. 2.
Like parts in the several figures are indicated This invention relates to an improved stayof` which it is composed, when constructed and operating substanti ally as hereinafter set forth and claimed. 4
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I willvproceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the annexed drawing, A designates achest or trunk, and B its lid which is hinged to the former. In the end pieces of A are inserted,
receptacles a a, which arc screwed or otherare provided with lids or covers, the longitudinal openings 2a in which are of less Width than p the chambers of the said cases, the object of anges or plates on each side thereof for the purpose of furnishing rails or bearing surfaces for the cylindrical projections secured to each side of and at right angles to the stay-braces,
which pass down into or enter the said cases through the openings 2a.. G (l designate the stay-braces, above mentioned, which are pivoted or hinged at one end within sockets or cases set-in the trunk or chest-lid B, to which the latter are fastened by screws or otherwise, and supplied at their opposite ends, on each side, with cylindrical projections c c ,whicl1, as the lid B is raised or lowered, moving or carrying with it the braces O O, bear aga-inst and slide underneath the slotted covers of thecases a al and within the chambers of Said cases.
By`means of the above-described devices it will be remarked that as the lid is thrown up or elevated it will be `held iirnily in this position until it is desired to lower the saine, which can be done by merely pulling or pressing the lid downward, without the trouble of pressing against springs, Snc., as is the case in raising and lowering the lids of trunks Where staybraces are used.
I do not claim a curvilinear bar or brace hinged at one end to the trunk or chest lid and entering the trunk at its opposite end in such a manner as that it shall have to describe the arc of a circle when it is caused to enter the same by reason of the closing of the lid but Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The straight staybraces O C hinged to the trunk or chest lid B and provided with the projections c c and the longitudinal slotted cases a a. of the trunk A, constructed and arranged to operate as shown and described..
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of March, A. D. 1871, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
