IMPROVEMENT IN i-:AR-rH-crosiars.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,540, dated June 4, 1872.

Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Earth-Olosets, invented by JOHN L. YOUNG, of the city, county and State of New York.

This invention relates to new and important improvements in earth-closets, whereby they are made more useful than they have heretofore been; and consists in the mode of discharging and distributing the dry earth, and in shutters for closing the seat-hole on the under side, the construction and arrangement being as hereinafter more fully described.

J J are rods'attached to the transverse bar K of the arms E and to the shutters. These shutters are grooved, as seen in Fig. 1, so that they close tightly together when the cover closes. L is a stationary pan, of metal, attached to the seat. M is a movable plate attached to the transverse bar K. N is a plate, hinged to M, which receives dry earth from the plate M and shoves it forward onto the spreader. O is the spreader, which works horizontally in grooves in the sides of the chest. It is actuated by means ofthe rods P and pivoted pieces Q, which connect it with the swinging arms E. The pieces Q pass up through slots in the spreader, as seen in the drawing. The spreader is made of slats of metal, connected together and arranged as seen in Fig. 2, so that the earth will fall through and be spread evenly over receiving-vessel. This spreader may be made in a single piece, with slots or other-shaped apertures therein, if desired. It It are springs on the back edges of the swing ing arms E, which springs are compressed against the back of the closet when the cover D is raised, but which react as it is closed and throws plates M and N forward with the earth. By a slight variation the jointed bars F F may be made to form hinges for the cover D, thereby dispensing With the butt-hinges now used.

The spreader O may perhaps be dispensed with, butI prefer to use it.

I do not limit or confine myself to the pre cise form or arrangement of any of the parts described, as they may be varied in many Ways Without departing from my invention.

Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The cover D, the spring-arms E E having bar K and connections P Q., jointed bars F G, and pivoted shutters H, combined, construct ed, and relatively arranged in an earth-closet with the movable plate M, hinged plate N, and spreader O, as and for the purpose described.
