CORNELIUS HOOD, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED BENCHES AND STEP-LAD-DERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,003, dated February 3, 1874; application filed October 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS Hoon, of Hartford, Hartford county, Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Combined Bench and Step-Ladder, of which the following` is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a view of the rear side of the implement folded up. Fig.- 2 is an edge or side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of the implement expanded into a bench or washform. Fig. et is a view of the implement expanded into a step-ladder. Fig. 5 is a view to the implement is adjusted for use.
The implement consists of a device which folds up very compactly, but can be adjusted into a wash-form, into a step-ladder without shelf, and into a step-ladder with shelf. The invention consists in the combinations of parts set forth in the claim at the end of this speciiication.
The letters a al a2 indicate a wooden frame, in which are rounds a3, serving as steps where the device is adjusted as a step-ladder. To this is hinged the frame b b1 b2 b3, serving as a back support to the frame a al a2, when adjusted as a step-ladder. To the frame-sides b b2 are pivoted two swinging frames, one composed of the two legs c'cl and the cross-piece and the board d2. These two sets of legs can be swung down, as shown in Fig. 3, the frame a al a2 uppermost, making a convenient washform. The upper ends of these legs project beyond their pivots, and when the device is adjusted, as shown in Fig. 3, these short ends sink into mortises made for them in the rear or under side 0f the frame-sides a a?, so as to hold the wash-form stiiily in position.
By swinging the free ends of the frames a al a? and b bl bl b3 apart, as shown' in Figs. 4 and 5, the device is adjusted into a step-ladder. It is held thus adjusted by the legs c c1, having the hooks e c upon their ends, taking into the loops e e', attached to the frame-sides a a?.
The legs d d1 can be swung out, as shown in Fig. 5, making a shelf of the board d2, it being supported in this adjustment by the pawlj', hinged to the cross-piecef, hooked to b1,when not in use, and swinging out under the shelf d2, its free end resting in a corresponding 1nor tise in the bottom of the shelf, so as to support the shelf.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the ladder-frame a al a2, the supporting-frame b b1 b2 b3, hinged thereto, and the two sets of legs c c1 Z d1, pivoted to the latter, and having tenoned ends shutting into mortises in the former, all constructed, arranged, and designed for operation and use, substantially as shown and described.
CORNELIUS HOOD.
