IMPROVEMENT IN `ARTISTS KITS.

To all whom it may concer/n:

Be it known that I, TnnonoRE CAMPE, of the city and coimty of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Artists Kits 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully under stand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a front or face view of the device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof in line x x, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of parts as folded or closed. Fig. et is a side view of the folded device. Fig. 5 is an end view thereof. Fig. 6 is a top view thereof.

This invention relates to a convenient and serviceable apparatus for artists7 purposes 5 and it consists in a combined easel, stool, and box. It also consists in the easel and stool so constructed and combined that they may be com-k pletelyfolded in the box. It also consists in a combined stool and box. It further consists in adapting therlegs of the stool as a receptacle for the palette. It also consists in a folding easel of peculiar construction. It also consists inthe construction of the sections of the easel. It also consists in mechanism attached to the easel for adjusting the height of the sketching-board. lt also consists in mechanism adapted for holding sketching-boards of `varying dimensions. Y

Referring to the drawings, A represents a box or frame, preferably of quadrilateral form, and open on two opposite sides and one end. B represents two legs, which are hinged within the box, near the outer edges of one side thereof, and are united at top and bottom by crosspieces a, which brace the legs. A piece, C, of suitable fabric is attached to the legs B and box A, in such manner that, when the legs are extended or swung out of the box and theV box stood on its bottom edge 11, as shown, the piece C will constitute a convenient seat or stool, which will be readily supported -by the legs and box, and the artist may straddle said stool, his limbs occupying positions at the sides ofthe box A. To the lower ends of the legs I attach feet D, which are hinged thereto, and, when extended, form eontinuations ot' the legs, in order that the stool will be properly elevated, and the bottom ofthe feet may rest dat and firmly on the ground, to assistwhich pins or spurs may be inserted in said bottoms. Hooks and eyes, latches, or other fastenings, E, are applied, respectively, to the legs and feet, in order to retain the latter parts in position, and shoulders c maybe formed with the feet to brace a-gainst the adjacent portion of the legs. By releasing the fastenings E and turning up the feet, the legs may be folded within the box, and, the piece C being properly rolled or folded, the box will receive the stool, the legs resting in the box at one side thereof. rPhe inner faces of the legs B and cross-bar a are grooved to receive the palette B, which thus occupies a position otherwise vacant. F represents an easel, which is constructed in sections G H J K L, adapted to be folded and tted within the box A, which receives the stool B C. The section G has slotted sides, through which pass set-screws M, to permit said section to slide in and out of the box. When the section is drawn out or ex-l tended, the set-screws hold it in position. The section H is hinged to the section G, and is somewhat of box form, to receive the section J, which is hinged to said section H, and, when not in use," designed to iit in the section H. rIhe section K is attached to the section J by joints N, which permit the former to slide in and out of the latter, and is of such dimensions as to fit inside of the section J, and, consequently, to tit with the section K within the section H. The section L is of dimension to it within the section K, and, likewise, with the said section and the section J, to be received within the section H, and said section L is connected to section K by a dovetail or other joint, which permits sliding movements of the former in and out of the latter, or by hinges, which accomplish the same result. The sections will be provided with set-screws, or other fastenin gs, to hold the parts in their extended positions.

lt will be seen that the sections G and H constitute the face of the easel, and the sections J, K, and L constitute the back or support thereof.

P represents a ledge for holding the sketching-board R, which ledge is hinged to a slide, S, fitted in the section H of the easel, so as to permit the raising and lowering of said ledge, and thus adjust the board R to the proper height. The slide S is notched, and a catch or latch, T, is secured to section H to engage with the notched portion of the slide for holding the ledge in its adjusted position. In the slide S is fitted a sliding strip, U, which carries at its upper end a bar, V, whose under side is shouldered, and provided with a pin, stud, or other means for holding the sketching-board opposite to the side resting on the ledge l).

rlhe sketching-board will be constructed of parts hinged to each other, and of such dimensions that when the several parts of the easel are folded and the board closed the latter will enter and fit the box A, as will be hereinafter stated.

\Vhen the device is required for use, the seat is swung out of the box, as has been stated. The sections J K L of the easel are new withdrawn from the section H and extended, and, by means of the set-screws, heldY in position. The sketching-board, canvas, or other article on which the work is to be performed is then rested on the ledge P of the slide S, and the bar 'V of the sliding strip U adjusted to take hold of the upper side of said boa-rd or other article which rests on the ledge, and the latter is then adjusted to the proper height, the latch T engaging with the notches ofthe slide S, and thereby retaining the ledge l in place. .Lhe various parts are now in position shown in Fig. 2.

\Vhen it is desired to fold the apparatus, the sections J K L are folded within the section Il, the sketchingboard or other article removed from the ledge l, and the slides S U are drawn in to their full extent. The har V is placed under the section L, and set-screw X, which retained the sections K L, as shown in Fig. 2, is so applied that the several sections are compaetly held together. rlhe feet l) ot' the legs of the stool are new released and folded 011 the legs, and the fabric (l rolled so that the stool may be closed in the box A; then slide the section (l into the box, and it will lit over the feet of the legs, and serve to hold the stool in the box A, while the space above said section is designed as the receptacle for the box of colors, or anjr loose articles. The position of parts is shown in Fig. 3. Now swing the folded sections H J K L over on the section G in the box A, and the sliding strip U will, be in such position that one end may be moved in an opening, e, in the box, whereby the several parts are firmly and compactly folded, and a small space only is left at the top of the box for the reception of the sketching-board l), which, when folded, will be held by a hook or fastening, f,ron the ledge P, Y

The combined easel, stool, and box form one compact package, the sides, ends, and top of which are clearly shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combined easel, stool, and box, constructed as described, to adapt the easel and stool to be folded in a compact bundle, and completely inclosed within the box, substantially as set forth.

2. The hinged feet l), in combination with the legs B and box A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The grooved legs B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. The section H of the easel, constructed to receive the sections J K L, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. The section Gr, adapted to slide in the box A, and hold the stool folded therein, substantiallj7 as and for the purpose set forth.

6. The sections J K L, folding in the sce tion l-I, .in combination with the section G, folding in the box A, the former folded sections being adapted to be laid on the section G when in the box, substantialljY as and for the purpose set forth.

7 The adjustable slide S and ledge l, combincd and operating with an easel, substan tially as and for the purpose set forth.

8. The sliding strip U, fitted in the slide S, when applied and operating as stated.
