To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OTTO C. L. HIRSOI-I, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Evanston, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Collapsible Tables, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to collapsible tables, and has for its object the provision of a structure which when in its distended condition may serve the purposes of a long table, but which structure is of such a character that when the various parts are taken apart and collapsed, all of them may occupy a very small space, and in fact may in one form of the invention be placed within a carrying case, and which carrying case under such conditions may then also be utilized as part of the table structure.

My invention for instance is applicable for use by workmen such as paper hangers who use a table which is carried from one house to another as itis required in the work.

In the particular form of the invention in which a carrying case incloses all of the parts and itself forms a portion of the table structure, I may say that there is also suflicient room in this carrying case to permit of placing other articles in the carrying case so as to accommodate probably nearly the whole kit of the workman. I will explain this particular form which -my invention may take more in detail by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the table in its distended condition; Fig. 2 is a portion of the table top in collapsed form; Fig. 3 is one of the side frames or stringers of the table in section on line aa of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a sectional view of one of the braces for holding the legs on line ?)b of Fig. 1; Fig. 5'

My improved device as specifically shown herein includes a carrying case 1 such asshown in F g. 8 at it c osed p siti i which carrying case has the two halves 2 and 3. This carrying case may have a suitable handle 4, and has

5 and 6 which are, when the case is in the condition of Figs. 8, 9 and 10 held together by'pintles 7. This carrying case which is shown in its open position in Figs. 9 and 10 contains all of the various parts necessary to make the table as shown in Fig. 1. The section 2 has

These logs in general are as shown in section in Fig. 7 and include a hinged sleeve member 12 hinged so that it may be collapsed into the position shown in Figs. 9 and 10, or bent outwardly as shown in Figs. 1. 6 and 7. This sleeve member 12 carries the leg proper 13 which is slidable in the sleeve member so as to be collapsible, a spring controlled pin 14 holding the leg member 13 in either of its distended positions. A. clasp 15 pivotally mounted in the sleeve structure 12 may be slipped around into position as shown in Figs. 1 to 7 to hold the legs in their proper position when they have been moved outwardly. The two sections 2 and 3 of the carrying case when separated may be stood upon the legs as shown more clearly in Figs. 1, 5 and 6 to form a part of the table.

In order to complete the table structure I employ two side frames or stringers 16, 17. The side frame 16 is hinged together as shown at- 18 and has hinge elements 19 and 20 by means of which it can be fastened to the case sections 2 and 3 at 21 and 22 as readily apparent by means of pintles. This side frame 16 also has collapsible arms 23 mounted thereon, which may serve to hold the rule or straight edge or other operating element when the table is in use. This side frame 16.further cooperates with braces 2 1, 24, which braces are held in place on said side frame by means of pins 25. Latches 26 hold the two portions of the brace in a straight line when said catch or clasp 1s actuated. These braces 16 then cooperate with the

8 and 10 as shown more clearly in Fig. 5. This side frame 16 also has a sliding bolt 27 to hold it in itsalined position as is readily understood. The side frame 17 is similarly constructed, having also a bolt 28 to hold it in its straight position, but carries pivotally attached thereto the

The structure thus far described when assembled presents approximately the appearance shown in Fig. 5. Between the two sections 2 and 3 and on top of the side frames 16 and 17 a collapsible top 32 is placed, which collapsible'top is shown in its collapsed position in Fig. 2. The collapsed top may be held on top of the side frames in any suit able manner, no special holding means being here illustrated as it is not thought necessary.

I have thus described a complete table which can be folded into very small compass.

From what has been described it will be readily clear to those skilled in the art, and it will also be clear that many modifications can be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

What I therefore claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A collapsible, portable table structure of the character described having two top sections adapted to form the end portions of the table top, legs for said top sections, collapsible side frames detachably uniting said top sections, and a collapsible top on top of said side framesbetween said top sections and supported by said side frames.

2. A collapsible, portable table structure of the character described having two top sections adapted to form the end portions of the table top, said top sections being both substantially alike and each forming onehalf of a carrying case, legs for said top sections, collapsible side frames detachably uniting said top sections, and a collapsible top on top of said side frames between said top sections and supported by said side frames.

3. A collapsible, portable table structure of the character described having two top sections adapted to form the end portions of the table top, said top sections being both substantially alike and each forming onehalf of a carrying case, means for detachably holding said sections together when said table structure is collapsed, said top sections serving as a container for the remaining elements of said table structure, legs for said top sections, collapsible side frames detachably uniting said top sections, legs for said top sections, collapsible side frames between said top sections and supported by said side frames.

l. A collapsible, portable table structure of the character described having two top sections adapted to form the end portions of the table top, said top sections being both substantially alike and each forming onehalf of a carrying case, means for detachably holding said sections together when said table structure is collapsed, said top sections serving as a container for the remaining elements of said table structure, collapsible legs for said top sections, collapsible side frames detachably uniting said top sections, and a collapsible top on top of said side frames between said top sections and supported by said side frames.

5. A collapsible, portable table structure of the character described having two top sections adapted to form the end portions of the table top, said top sections being both substantially alike and each forming one half of a carrying case, means for detachably holding said sections together when said table structure is collapsed, said top sections serving as a container for the remaining elements of said table structure, collapsible legs for said top sections, said legs being hinged to said top sections, side frames detachably uniting said top sections, and a collapsible top on top of said side frames between said top sections.

6. A collapsible, portable table structure of the character described having two top sections adapted to form the end portions of the table top, said top sections being both substantially alike and each forming onehalf of a carrying case, means for detachably holding said sections together when said table structure is collapsed, said top sections serving as a container for the re maining elements of said table structure, legs for said top sections, side frames detachably uniting said top sections, a collapsible top on top of said side frames between said top sections, and detachable braces extending from said side frames to said legs.

7. A collapsible, portable table structure of the character described having two top sections adapted to form the end portions of the table top, said top sections being both substantially alike and each forming onehalf of a carrying case, means for detachably holding said sections together when said table structure is collapsed, said top sections serving as a container for the remaining elements of said table structure, legs for said top sections, side frames detachably uniting said top sections, a collapsible top on top of said side frames between said top sections, detachable braces extending from said side frames to said legs, and collapsible supporting arms extending horizontally from one of said side frames.
