PORTABLE FOLDING GOT. No. 505,409. Patented Sept. 19, 1893.
vzw/ @WV UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN D. MORRELL, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
PORTABLE FOLDING COT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,409, dated September 19, 1893.
Application filed July 19,1892. Serial No. 440,455. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN D. MORRELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Folding Cots, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in beds, particularly to that class known as portable folding cots.
The object of this invention, is, to provide a cot specially adapted to be readily and conveniently folded in a compact bundle, of comparatively small size, and at the same time, one that shall present a neat appearance.
The invention furthermore, contemplates the provision of a case or covering designed to contain the cot after it has been folded, the cover being provided with suitable means for carrying the same.
A further object of the invention resides in the employment of such peculiar construction whereby the head portion of the cot may be readily adjusted to any desired angle of elevation.
The object of the invention is finally to provide a portable cot, that shall be at once strong, durable and thoroughly efficient in use.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in a portable cot, comprising the usual side rails and the pivotally secured X-shaped legs or braces adapted to fold inwardly, or toward each other.
The invention consists furthermore, in the combination with the side rails supported on the X-shaped braces, of the detachably secured extension pieces, for the purpose of increasing the length of the cot, and the hinged head portion adj ustably supported by the X- brace.
The invention furthermore, consists in a novel form of cover, adapted to be secured to the side rails and capable of being readily detached for washing, c.
The invention finally consists in various novel details of construction hereinafter to be more fully described and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, in which- Figure 1, is a view in perspective of one form of folding cot, embodying my improvements and showing same set up ready for use. Figs.2 and 3, are viewsin detail of one of the side rails shown detached. Fig. 4, is an enlarged detail view of the hinged joint between the horizontal and incline rail sections. Fig. 5, is a similar view showing the connection between the horizontal rail section and the extension piece, also showing in dotted lines the pivotal connection of the X-shaped brace with said rails, and Fig. 6, is a view showing the appearance of the cot when in its folded position and inclosed within the covering or case. in g the position of certain parts, when the cot is partly folded. Fig. 8, is a similar View,
- showing the cot completely folded, and Fig.
9, is a view of the cover, with the head portion folded and resting on the body portion.
In the drawings: A, indicates the cot, having the side rails a, a, supported by the X- shaped legs B, the latter being braced longitudinally by the rods 1), b, and held in position by the stretcher 29 The inclined portion A is similarly provided with side rails a 64 which are braced by the adjustable X-shaped brace pieces B said rails a being removably held by means of hooks a secured in the ends thereof and designed to engage in the apertures of said X-brace,as shown in Fig. 2. The opposite ends are hinged, as shown in Fig. 4, wherein a, represents a socket piece secured on the ends of the rail and provided with a series of apertures a", adapted to receive the hook end of the pivotal hinge a the latter being secured by the screw a in one of a series of apertures a formed in the collars a ,a ,of the horizontal rail a. The projecting end of said rail is suitably rounded or beveled and fitting the socket piece, (as shown in dotted lines.) Thus it will be understood, that when it is desired to incline the head portion, the side rails thereof will be guided andretained in position by the pivotal hinges as above described. I
In Fig. 5, the method of lengthening th part is illustrated, wherein the upper slotted Fig. 7, is a view in perspective show- I end of one of the X-shaped supporting legs or braces B, is shown pivotally held on the lateralprojection a slotted at a of the collar a ,bythe pin 01, said collar being loosely secured on a reduced portion of the rail and held in position by the socket piece 0, of the extension rail C.
To fold the cot, the stretcher b and the lateral brace 12 are detached, also the X-brace B when the first told is made, by turning the inclined portion A on its pivot until it rests on the cot proper. The next step is to fold the braces B toward each other after removing the extension pieces O, until said braces rest on the bottom of the cover D, after which the several small parts may be advantageously placed to form a compact bundle to snugly fit in case E. The cover D, is so arranged, whereby it may be readily slipped ofI" the side rails, when desired, for purposes of washing, &c.
It will be understood that various changes may be made in the detail construction of the invention Without departing from the general idea involved.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1'. In a .folding cot, the combination with the side rails a-, of the inclined rails a the connection between the rails aa comprisingthe socket-piece a, adapted for the reception of the beveled extremities of said rails -a and having a series of apertures -a, the hinge piece -a engaging the apertures, and the collars a on which said hinge piece is adj ustably secured, as specified.
2. The combination with the side rails a, of the inclined rails a and the hinge connection between the same as described, the collars a loosely mounted on the reduced portions of said rails -a and the extensions C having sockets c engaging the extremities of said reduced portions to retain said collars in position, as specified.
3. In a folding cot, the combination with the side rails a of the inclined rails 'a the hinge connection between the same as described, the collars a a loosely mounted on said rails a and provided with slotted lugs a the collapsible supporting legs -BB-- pivotally secured to said lugs and suitably braced, and the removably secured cover D-, as specified.
4. In a folding cot, the combination with the side rails a, of the inclined rails a and the X -shaped legs B, supporting the first named by a pivotal connection comprising the collars a a having the lateral slotted projections a adapted to be held in a recess formed in the upper end of the leg B, by the pivotal pin a, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Iaftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
