Be it known that I, TnoMAs MCCABE, VJ r., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Homestead, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Combined Trunk and Desk, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in combined trunks and desks, an object being to provide a device of this character in which a trunk will serve the usual purposesand having an attachment that may be used as a writing-desk, a drawing-board, a reading-table, or the like, the attachment being so arranged as to fold into the trunk when not in use, thus resulting in economy of space.

I will describe a combined trunk and desk embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,

Referring iirst to the example of my improvement illustrated in Fig. 1, which shows a desk as attached to a very low trunk, 1 designates the trunk, and 2 the cover thereof, which is held from swinging too far back by means of the usual iexible straps 3. Pivoted to the inner side of the trunk at the front are standards 4, which at their upper ends have pivotal connection with lugs 4 on a desk-leaf 5, and also having pivotal connection with the standards are brace-rods, each consisting of two sections 6 7, the sections 7 being pivoted to the trunk near the rear side. The sections 6 and 7 are pivoted together, and one section is provided with a lug 8 for engaging in a notch in the other section, thus holding the sections rigidly in place when extended. A brace-frame 9 is mounted to swing on pivots yl() of the upright 4, and it also has hinged connection 11 with the leaf 5 near the inner edge, and also hinged to said leaf 5 are brackets 12, having dovetail lugs 13 for engaging in correspondingly-shaped notches formed in the standards 4. When therleaf 5 is folded into the trunk, the braceframe 9 will fold down on the upper side of the same, as indicated in Fig. 3, and the brackets 12 will also fold upon the leaf and will be held by spring-pressed latches 14, secured to the leaf. Hinged yto the inner edge of the leaf 5 is a supplemental leaf 15, which when in position for use will be turned back to extend over the trunk, and as a means for supporting the same I have provided its ends with sliding pieces 16, designed to rest on lugs 17, secured to the edge of the end boards of the cover-top. The upper edge of the end boards of the trunk-body is provided with recesses 18 for receiving said lugs when the cover is closed. The sliding pieces 16 are provided with dovetail channels for receiving correspondingly-shaped ribs 19 on castings 20, secured to the leaf 15. When these sliding pieces 16 are moved inward, their outer ends will be flush with the ends of the leaf 15, so that said leaf may be readily folded into the trunk, and when folded it will rest on blocks 21, secured to the inner side of the trunkbody at the back, and'at the front the leaves will be supported by cleats 22, secured to the inner sides of the ends of the trunk.

In the example of my improvement illustrated in Fig. 8 the attachment is designed for a comparatively high trunk or one in which it is not necessary to raise the desk above the trunk. Referring thereto, 23 indicates the high trunk, and 24 the cover thereof. Having swinging connection with the front wall of the trunk is a desk-leaf 25, and having swinging connection with the inner edgeof this desk-leaf 25 is a supplemental leaf 26, which IOO is supported by the sliding pieces 16, similar to those first described;l but in this instance the sliding pieces rest on the upper edge of the end boards of the trunk. Brackets 27 are hinged to the leaf 25, and when in supporting position they are engaged by dovetail ribs 28, formed on castings 29, secured to the front of the trunk and having at the outer end stopribs 30, which will prevent the brackets from swinging too far Outward.

, The said brackets, it will be noted, are provided with notches 31 for receiving said ribs 28. When not in use, the leaf 25 will be folded upon the leaf 26 and both turned into the trunk, resting on blocks 32, and of course the brackets 27 will be folded down onto the leaf 25, as shown in Fig. 10.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination with a trunk, of a leaf having swinging connection therewith, dovetailed ribs on the free edge of said leaf at the ends, and sliding extension pieces having' channels conformed to said ribs and adapted to engage fixed portions of the trunk.

2. The combination with a trunk, of swinging standards, sectional braces connected to the standards and to the trunk, a leaf having swinging connection with the standards, and brackets hinged to the leaf and having lugs, the standards being provided with recesses to receive said lugs.

3. The combination with a trunk, of standards mounted to swing thereon and having dovetail recesses, sectional braces having connection at one end with the standards and at the other end with the trunk, a leaf having swinging connection with the standards, brackets hinged to the leaf and having dovetail lugs for engaging in said recesses in the standards, and a supplemental leaf hinged to the firstnamed leaf. i

5. The combination with a trunk, of standards mounted to swing thereon, a desk-leaf having swinging connection with the standards, a supplemental leaf hinged to the inner edge of the first-named leaf, sliding extensionpieces on the inner edge of the supplemental leaf, lugs on the trunk-cover for engaging with said sliding pieces, and brackets hinged to the first-named leaf and adapted to engage with the standards.

The combination with a trunk, of standards having swinging connection therewith, a leaf having swinging connection with the standards, a brace-frame having swinging connection with the leaf and also having swinging connection with the trunk, brackets hinged to the leaf and adapted to engage with the standards, sectional braces having connection with the standards and with the trunk, a supplemental leaf hinged to the first-named leaf, extension-pieces on said supplemental leaf, and lugs on the trunk-cover for engaging with said extension-pieces.
