Description

UNITED STATES PATENT v OFFICE.
GEORGE KING, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BENCHES.
Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 177,725, dated May 23, 1876; application filed April 24, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE KING, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Oombined Step -Ladder and Wash- 'Bench; and declare the following to be a specification thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings-in which like letters indicate like parts. v
Figure l is a perspective view of my stepladder. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same converted into a wash-bench.
My invention is a combination of a step ladder and wash-bench, and is a useful article for domestic use, the cost being but slightly more than that of a step-ladder alone. It consists in making the standards of the ladder double, and dividing and slotting the inner standards, soas to allow of their being folded to form the legs of the bench when desired.
In Fig. l the two top steps are cut away to show .the construction of the standards in the rear. The standards A are of the usual shape. The standards B are placed beside them, and are fastened permanently together by the rods a and b at the top and bottom. The standards B are hinged to the ladder O in the usual manner. Half-way the length of the standa-rd B they are divided, the upper parts 0 turning upon the hinges, the lower parts 01 turning upon the rod 1). The part c is mortised at its end to receive the tenoned end of the part d. Through these tenon-joints and standards A the rod 0 passes from side to side, held in position on one side by the head f, and on the other by the thumb-screw g. The upper part c of the standard B has a longitudinal slot, within which the rod a may slide.
The braces D are pivoted to the ladder O and hook upon the rod 0. A shelf, E, (with arms slotted longitudinally to slide upon the rod a,) swings upon the rod a, and when in position extends horizontally to the rear, the inner ends of the arms being inserted between the step it and the pieces i. The outer ends of the arms are mortised', as shown at j.
To change the ladder into a bench, unhook the braces D; remove the thumb-screw g; draw out the rod 0; open the folding standards 13; insert the tenons of the parts 01 into sockets or mortises made to receive them into the frame of the ladder O, as shown at k, Fig. 2;
was the ladder the wash-tub can be set, and A a substantial and strong bench is obtained.
I claim as a novel and useful invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combined step-ladder and wash-bench, consisting of the ladder 0, standards A, standards B, composed of the slotted pieces 0 and pieces (1, braces D, shelf E, and rods a, b, and 0, made and operated substantially as described.
GEORGE KING.
