THOMAS D. MoNrAoUn'oF PICTURE nocxs, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED BENCH AND CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1909.
Application filed March 25, 1908. Serial No. 423,254.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS D. MoN- TAGUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Picture Books, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bench and Chair, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to a combined bench and chair or lawn seat.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character comprising two sections adapted to be connected to form a bench or stand for one'or more wash-tubs or a tub and a clothes basket, or to be connected in a different manner for conversion into a chair or lawn seat.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination article of this character which is simple of construction, adapted to be conveniently arranged for either mode of use, and capable of being readily collapsed in close compass for storage or transportation. V
l Vith these and other objects in View, the invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device with parts arranged to form a chair and indicating in dotted lines the adjustability of the section forming the chair back. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device with parts arranged to form a bench or stand. Fig. 4:
. is a view of the main section collapsed.
The device comprises a main section 1 and an auxiliary section 2. The section 1 is-in the form of a bench or stand and has a horizontal top comprising a pair of'parallel side bars 3 connected by transverse slats 1 extending across the upper surfaces thereof.
The said horizontal top is supported at each side by a pair of cross legs 4* and 4* pivotally connected at their upper ends to cross rods 5 and 6 mounted in the side bars 3 and pivotally connected with each other by a pin or bolt 7. The legs 1* and 4 at the opposite sides are respectively connected by cross rods or rungs 8 and 9, whereby they are stayed and reinforced, said rods or rungs being respectively arranged above and below the pivot 7. The legs 1* and 4 are adapted to fold on their pivots in parallel relation and the top to fold downward between the same, whereby the said main section may be collapsed, as shown in Fig. 4, in close compass for storage or shipment. The side bars 3 are formed with notches 1O andv 10 to respectively receive the rungs 8 and 9 when the device is thus collapsed, and preferably the cross rod 6 is fitted, as shown, within the notches 10 which are of sufficient width to also admit the rung 9.
The auxiliary section comprises a frame formed of a pair of parallel side bars 11 connected at their outer ends by a cross rod 12 and also connected intermediately by a cross rod 13 having its ends extended to form supporting pins 1-1. Slats 15 extend across between the bars 11 and form a platform or rest between the rods 12 and 14. At the outer end of the auxiliary section are folding legs 16 pivoted at one end to the rod 12 and connected with the side bars 11 by jointed braces 17 adapted to fold to permit the legs to swing to a position partially between the bars 11 and against the rear side of the rod 14. If desired, cross braces 18 may be pro vided to connect the legs 16 for the purpose of reinforcing the same, and each leg is formed with a recess 16 adapted to receive the cross rod 14 when said legs are folded between the bars 11. The inner or lower ends 19 of the bars 11 form supporting and bearing arms, and each is provided with a notch or recess 20. It will be understood that the section alone may be employed to form a stand or support, and as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the two sections are adapted to be connected to form a chair or lawn seat. In this use of the device, the section 1 is e x tended and the arms 19 of the section 2 pass downwardbetween the bars 3 of the section 1 and between the adjacent slats at the end of the section adjoining the rod 6 until the supports 14 rest upon the upper edges of the bars 3 and the lower ends of the arms 19 bear against the outer surface of the rod or rung 9. The platform portion of the section 1 will then form the seat of a chair, while the slatted portion of the section 2 will form the back thereof, said section 2 being supported by the pins 14 and held from forward or rearward swinging movement by the rods 6 and 9. If it is desired to incline the back rearwardly to a greater angle, the section 2 may be shifted to the dotted line position in Fig. 1 to bring the arms 19 to rest against the brace rod 8. The two sections may also be connected to form an extended bench or platform for supporting one or more washtubs, or for supporting a tub and a clothes basket or other articles. In connecting the parts for this purpose the arms 19 are slid between the arms 3 of the section 1 and below the slatted platform thereof until their notches 2O engage the rod 6 and thus lock said section 2 in position to project horizontally in the plane of the section 1, after which the legs 16, which are folded in the use of the section 1 as the back of a chair, are swung downward to rest upon the floor and the braces 17 outfolded to support the same in position. lVhen the parts are thus disposed they will be firmly c011- nected to form an extended stand, platform or table, as will be readily understood.
From the foregoing description, the construction and the mode of use of the device will be readily understood, and it will be seen that a convenient article of furniture is provided which when not in use as a single or extended stand or platform may be employed as a chair. hen it is desired to closely pack the device for storage or ship-- ment, the section 1 may be folded as shown in Fig. 4 and thensection 2 with its legs 16 folded laid fiat against the same and the two sections connected or bound together in any preferred manner.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is z.
1. A device of the character described, comprising a main section having a platform portion embodying a pair of spaced bars, and legs for supporting said portion,
said legs being arranged in pairs at the opposite sides of the device and one leg of each pair connected by a cross rod, and an auxiliary section comprising a platform portion having arms extending from one end thereof and provided with supporting projections, said arms being adapted to be inserted between the cross bars of the main sec tion and to engage the said cross rod and said supporting projections to rest upon said side bars, thus adapting the platform portions of the two sections to form the seat and back of a chair.
2. A device of the character described,
comprising a main section embodying a slatted platform portion including side bars and pivotally connected crossed legs at the opposite sides of said platform portion, one of ethe legs of each side being connected at their upper ends by a cross bar detachably engaging the platform portion and the other legs being pivotally connected with the plat form and also connected with each other by :ross rods ar'anged above and below the pivotal connection between the legs, and an auxiliary section having a slatted platform portion and including side bars extended to form arms, said a ms being provided with lateral supporting pins and adapted to be inserted down through the platform of the main section to bring said pins to rest upon the side bars thereof and the lower ends of the arms to engage one of the aforesaid cross rods.
3. A device of the character described. comprising a main section embodying a slatted platform and crossed legs at the opposite sides of the platform pivotally connected with each other, one pair of legs being connected by a cross bar detachably engaging the platform and the legs of the other pair being pivotally connected with the platform and provided above and below the pivotal connection between the pairs of legs with cross rods, and an auxiliary section comprising side bars connected by cross slats at their outer ends to form a platform portion and extended from said platform portion to provide arms adapted to be passed downward between the side bars of the platform of the main section and bear against one or the other of said cross rods and having laterally projecting supporting pins to rest on said side bars and also having notches adjacent thereto to interlock with the aforesaid cross bar, supporting legs pivoted to the outer ends of said side bars, and jointed braces pivotally connecting the legs with the bars.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
