UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUSH E. AVERY, OF'NEW YORK, ,N. Y.
FOLDING COT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,977, dated December 28, 1880,.
Application filed July 29, 1880.
To all whom t't-may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSH E. AVERY, of the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Folding Cot, of which thefollowing is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved folding cot which is simple in construction, convenient in use, and which can be folded or erected without detaching, attaching, or couplingany parts.
The invention consists of afoldin g cot formed of two longitudinal rails or bars for support ing the canvas, which rails are made in three pieces, the upper one forming. the inclined head-rest, whereas the lower ones form the body of the cot, and are supported by journaled legs and connected by transverse braces hinged in the middle, so as to fold when the cot is folded. The lower end section of the cot is also supported by an additional leg, and hinged stiffening-braces are arranged at each end of the cot.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the under side of my improved folding cot, showing the same erected for use.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the under side of the same, showing the cot partially folded. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on line a; m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is an end eleva- 6 is a perspective view of my improved folding cot, showing the same folded for transportation or storage.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The side rails of the cot are each formed of three pieces, B G D, which are hinged or pivoted to each other in such a manner that the end pieces,B D, fold over the center piece, 0. The upper ends of the pieces 0 and the lower ends of the upper end pieces, B, are beveled, so that the end pieces, B I), cannot assume a horizontal posit-ion when the cot is unfolded, but form an inclined head-rest. Each center piece, 0, is supported by the legs E E, journaled in the said pieces 0 and in a longitudinal base-rail, F. 4
The legs E E are connected with blocks or small posts G G by means of brace-rods H H, and the blocks G G are'hinged to each (No model.)
other in such manner that they and the bracerods H fold inward and toward each other, as shown in Fig. 2.
The inner sides of the pieces B D of the rails A are provided with longitudinal recesses J J on the lower sides to receive the horizontal folding stiffening-braces K K, pivoted to the ends of the pieces B D, respectively, and also pivoted to each other. At the pivoted ends they are provided with slightly-projecting lugs to, which prevent them from collapsing outwardly. If desired, one of the said brace-rods may be provided with a pivoted leg, L, as shown in Fig. 5. The lower end piece, D, is also'snpported by an additional leg, M, pivoted thereto and connected with the end of the base-rail F by a brace, N, pivoted I to the base-rail and the bottom of the said leg M.
If desired, the small posts or blocks G G may reach down to the floor, and the base-rail F may be notched out to admit them when the cot is folded, and likewise the legs M may be pivoted to the inner side of the pieces D, and in that case the stiffening-braces K K may fold in the vertical plane, and may be bent so as not to be in the way of the feet or head of the person resting on the cot.
The canvas B is securely fastened to the side rails, A, and to them only.
The cot is folded and erected as follows: When used as a cot it is in the position shown in Fig. 3. When it is to be folded the longitudinalrails are pressed toward each other, the blocks F'and brace-rods H folding inwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, and the legs E E rotating on their pivoted journals. The upper section or head-rest, formed by the pieces B B, is then folded down in the direction of. the arrow a, the stiffening-braces K K having been previously pressed inward in the direction of the arrow 1), Fig. 1. The lower section, formed of the pieces D D, is then folded "over the head-rest in the direction of the arrow'd. By performing the above operations in the inverse order the cot is erected.
The above-described cot can be folded to occupy a very small space, and is very convenient for transportation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In a folding cot, the combination, with of the legs E, base-rails F, pivoted block G, the longitudinal rails A, formed of three pivbrace-rods H, leg M, and stiffening-braces K 10 oted sections, of the canvas R, the jonrnaled K, and canvas R, substantially as herein shown legs E, the hinged blocks or posts G G, and the and described, and for the purpose set forth.
5 brace-rods H H, substantially as herein shown RUSH E. AVERY.
and described, and for the purpose set forth. Witnesses:

rails A, formed of the pivoted sections B O D, G. SEDGWIOK.
