UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY BROOKS, OF UNIONTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-FOURTH TO ALEXANDER W. CRAIG AND ONE-FOURTH TO DOMINICK S. LEPPE, BOTH OF UNION- TOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1914.
Application filed April 3, 1914. Serial No. 829,361.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY BRooKs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Uniontown, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Convertible Arm-Chairs and Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide an article of furniture which can be converted from an arm chair to a folding bed or vice versa.
The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a device which normally is in the nature of'an arm chair and which can be converted into a bed preferably adapted for the use of children, the operation of converting the chair into a bed or vice versa being simple and accomplished almost in a moment.
A still further embodiment of the invention resides in an article of furniture wherein, when the arm chair is converted into the bed, the bed clothes for use with the bed will be contained in the arm chair and need only be unfolded in order to place the same in position for use.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all. the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, showing the same used as an arm chair; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device, showing the same converted into a bed; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the structure disclosed in Fig. 2; Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 4.4: in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on the line 5-5 in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a frame 10 having legs 11, arms 12, rear uprights 13 and a preferably latticed bottom 14. Horizontal. portions 15 of the frame 10 are provided with longitudinal shoulders 16, upon which. a seat 17 is adapted to repose and similarly the rear uprights 13 have shoulders 18, against which a back 19 is adapted to lie so that the frame 10, with the seat 17 and back 19, will form the chair 20 disclosed in the views. The front end of the seat 17 includes a depending portion 21 which is adapted to overlap a plurality of horizontal rods 22 connecting opposed portions of the frame by means of a suitable turnbuckle 23 so that the rods will not be visible when the article of furniture is complete to form the chair mentioned.
Journaled on the frame 10 at the inner l a rear cross piece 29, form a box 30 into which the U-shaped member 28 can be swung and normally lie, the said bed spring 26 having connection with the bar 24 and member 28 being also adapted to lie in the said box when not in use. The seat 17 will close the said box 30 when the seat is arranged in position. on the frame, thus covering the bed spring and U-shaped member 28 when the article of furniture is used as a chair, as shown.
A tick 31 is adapted to be used in connection with the article of furniture described when the same is to be used as a bed and the said tick preferably consists of a plurality of hingedly connected sections 32 which, when relatively folded, will lie wholly within the box 30 and can also be covered by the seat 17. each section has connected. thereto a series of flexible straps 33, with the straps on the rear section adapted to be connected with hooks 3 1 on the horizontal bar 24: and the The outer end of straps of the front section adapted to be by the rear cross piece 29, while the seat 17 reposing upon the shoulders 16, will constitute a cover for the box 30 so that the U- shaped member 28, its supporting members i 37, the tick 31 and the bed spring 26, contained in folded position within the box, will be completely hidden and covered so as not to be visible to the observer. Thus there is provided a chair which will have a neat and effective appearance and which will appear the same as any other chalr or similar article of furniture. Now if it 1s desired to convert the chair into a bed, the seat 17 and back '19 are removed from the:
frame 10 and then the U-shaped member 29 is swung from a position within the box to an open position and the supporting members 37 thereof are also swung into open position so that when the U-shaped member is Z extended. it will be held in horizontal posi-i tion by the supporting members 37 and will i hold the bed spring in a horizontal and ex- Similarly, the tick 31,;
tended position. connected to the horizontal bar 24k and 'U-shaped member 28, will unfold when the.
U-shaped member is extended so that the; tick will extend throughout the length of: the bed spring and be supported thereon,; thus with the usual bed sheets and cover-i i'ngs forming a convertible bed 39, as shown.
In order to prevent any collapsing of the; bed, a plurality of securing members 40 are; mounted to swing upon the U-shaped memi ber 28 and are adapted for engagement with the ends of the rods 22, thus holding the shaped member and bed spring in open and;
extended position.
It will be apparent that? by having the box 30 made suflicientlyi large, coverings and a pillow can be readilyf placed and carried therein to be used with; the bed but held in the box with the tick and bed spring when the same are not in use.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the article of furniture described can be readily formed into a con--v vertible arm chair or bed, and although I preferably desire to construct my device so that the bed can be conveniently adapted for children, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to the size or construction of the article of furniture or to the specific construction of the same as set forth in the views, the scope of the inventio'n being defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame having a bottom and sides forming a box, of a horizontal bar on the frame, a U shaped member mounted to swing on the frame and normally lying within the box, a bed spring connected to the horizontal bar and the U- shaped member and normally lying in the box, with the bed spring adapted to be unfolded when the U-shaped member is extended relatively to the frame, a foldable tick normally lying within the box and adapted to be unfolded with the bed spring, means connecting the tick with the said horizontal bar and the U-shaped member for holdingthe tick in position relatively to the bed spring, and a seat for the frame and constituting a covering for the box for closing the same when the contents of the box have been arranged therein.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with 'a frame including a bottom and sides forming a box, of a horizontal bar on the frame, a U-shaped mem ber mounted to swing onthe frame and normally lying within =,the'box, a bed spring carried by the horizontal bar and the U- shaped member and adapted to be unfolded when theU-shaped member is extended, supporting members for supporting the U shaped member in extended and horizontal position, said supporting members being foldable relatively to the U-shaped member and adapted to lie in the box therewith, shoulders formed on the sides of the frame, and a seat for the frame and constituting a cover for the box when its contents have been. arranged therein.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame including a bottom and sides forming a box, of a horizontal bar on the frame, a U-shaped member mounted to swing on the frame and normally lying within the box, a bed spring carried by the horizontal bar and the U-, shaped member and adapted to be unfolded when the U-shaped member is extended, supporting members for supporting the U- shaped member in extended and horizontal position, said supporting members being foldable relativelyto the 'U-shaped member and adapted to lie in. the box therewith,
shoulders formed on the sides of the frame,
a seat for the frame and constituting a cover for the box when its contents have been arranged therein, and a forwardly depending member carried by the seat to close the front end of the box adjacent to the point of pivotal connection of the said U- shaped member with the frame.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame forming a box, of a bar supported on the frame, a U- shaped member mounted to swing on the frame and movable into an extended position thereon, a bed spring supported on the said bar and the U-shaped member and foldable within the box when the U -shaped members lies therein, supporting members for supporting the U-shaped member in a horizontal and extended position, means carried by the U-shaped member and engaging the frame for holding the bed spring and U shaped member and constituting a cover for the box to inolose the said bed spring and U-shaped member therein when the same are not in use.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
