To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CrIARLns W. CLoUoH, ALFRED N. CLOUGH, and TVVILLIAM O. SPRiNG, all citizens of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Combination Folding Cot and Seat, of which the following is a specification.
An object of this invention is to produce a device of this character which will serve both as a cot and as a seat or settee according to the relative arrangement of the various elements.
Another object is the production of a device of this character having maximum strength when unfolded for use and capable of being compactly folded when not in use.
Other objects and advantages may appear in the subjoined detail description taken in connection with the drawings filed herewith.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the invention arranged to form a cot, the cover partly shown in Fig. 2 being omitted and a portion of one of the legs being broken away for clearness of illustration. Dotted lines show folding positions of some of the parts.

There are provided telescoping side rails formed of channel iron and each comprising endsections 1, 2 and an intermediate section 3, and'there are provided end rails, each comprising end sections 4:, 5 and an intermediate section 6, the sections 5, 6 of each end rail having a hinge joint formed by a pivot 7 and the sections a, 6 being shiftably connected to one another by a sleeve 8 and said sections 4, 5 being jointed by pivots 8 to front and rear legs 9, 10 respectively which may be formed of channel iron and which are pivoted at 11 to the ends of the side rails, all of said rail sections 1 to 6 inclusive forming a rectangular frame supported at its corners bythe legs. The end lower ends of folding braces comprising upper and lower sections 17, 18 hinged together by pivots 19', and the rear legs 10 are pivoted at 20 to the lower ends of folding braces comprising upper and lower sections 21, 22 which are hinged together by pivots 23. The upper ends of the end brace sections 17, 21 are provided with studs 24: which are jointed at 25 as in Fig. 18 so that when the joints are bent, the studs cannot be drawn out of the holes in the end rails in which the pivots 24 are seated when the parts are arranged as in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive.
The rear legs 10 are extensible, being provided with jack knife or hinge joints 111 formed by pivots connecting the upper and lower leg sections together, and when said legs are in the extended positions shown in Figs. 12 and 13 the studs of the end braces of the front legs 9 seat in holes 28 in the lower portions of the rear legs 10, and the stud 24 of each of the braces of the rear legs is designed to seat in one of the holes 26 in the appropriate end rail.
To prevent the braces from collapsing or folding when they are in the extended positions, the brace sections 14 and 18 are provided with notches 30 as in Fig. 10 adapted to engage stops in the form of laterally extending lugs 31 adjacent the lower ends of the brace sections 13, and 17 respectively, and the brace sections 21 are provided with studs 32 designed to detachably engage holes 33 in the brace sections 22.
The frame is braced midway of'its length by a folding V-shaped middle brace comprising end sections 34, 35 and an intermediate section 36 which is pivoted by a pivot 37 and a screw 37 to the lower ends of the end sections 34, 35, the upper endsof said end sections being provided with hooks 38 designed to engage holes 39 in the intermediate side rail sections 3 as clearly shown in Fig. 8.
When the p arts are in the cot-forming positions shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive the intermediate section 36 of the middle brace is at an angle to the section 34 and may rest on any supporting surface, for instance, the surface of the ground, but when the parts are in the seat-forming positions shown in Figs. 12 and 13, the section 36 is in alinement with the section 34 and the sections 34, 36 are held against collapsing or folding by a stud 40 of the section 36 engaging a hole 41 in the section 34.
The side rail sections 1, 2 and 3 are provided in their outer sides with holes 42 to receive studs 43 projecting from flat strips 44 which are in sections and are fastened along the side margins of a cover 45, thus holding the cover 45 on the frame so as to sustain the weight of a person or persons lying or seated on the cover.
The side rail sections 1 are provided in their upper faces with holes 46, as clearly shown in Fig. 14, designed to receive hooks 49 projecting from the horizontal legs of L-shaped standards 50 which form the end bars of a head bracket that is also provided with a cross bar 51'connecting the lower ends of the standards 50 to one another and that is also provided with diagonal braces 52 as in Fig. 15 pivoted at 53 to the cross bar 51 and detachably connected at their upper ends by studs 54 extending through the braces 52 and through holes 55 in the "standards 50 and also passing through holes 56 in the flat strips, said studs 54 being provided with joints 57 so that, when the tions 1, as is clearly understood.
The telescoping connections between adjacent side rail sections are constructed, as clearly shown in Figs. 5, G and 7, the section end portions that embrace the end portions of adjacent sections having their edges bent underneath the edges of said adjacent sections to form retaining flanges 58. The sections 3 are provided with stops 59 which act to engage the pivots 12 in sections 2 so that the sections 2, 3 cannot be separated, and the sections 3 are provided with stops 60 which act to engage the inner ends of the flanges 58 so that the sections 1, 3 cannot be separated.
in practice assuming that the parts are in the relative positions shown in Figs. 16 and 17 with the upper faces of the side rails uppermost and just the reverse of the showing in said figures, the side rails will first be spread apart from one another to straighten out the end rails and the sleeves 8 Will be moved into place to lock the end rail sections 5, 6 against relative folding so as to hold the end rails in their extended positions. lhen the frame will be raised first at one end and then at the other end and the legs will be opened downward away from the side rails to perpendicular position, and the sections 4, 6 will be drawn apart to extend the end rails to their greatest length, and the end braces will be fully extended and their studs 24 inserted in the holes 26 in the end rails. Then the side sections 1, 2, 3 of the side rails will be drawn apart to lengthen said side rails to their greatest extent and then the studs 43 of the cover 45 will be inserted in the holes 42, thus producing the arrangement shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4 to form a cot.
If it is desired to raise one end of the cover 45 to form an inclined head rest, the hooks 49 of the standards 50 will be seated in the appropriate holes 46 and the braces 52 will be swung into position so that the studs 54 can be inserted through the holes 55 and into the appropriate holes 56 in the sections of the flat strips at the head so as to incline one end portion of the cover, as clearly shown in Fig. 14.
If it be desired to use the device as a seat or settee, assuming that the parts are in the positions shown in'Figs. 2 to 4, the studs 24 of the brace sections 17 will be 24 of the brace sections 17 Will be inserted in the holes 28 of the rear legs 10, thus producin the seat arrangement shown in Figs. 12 an 13.
WVhat We claim is:
1. In combination, telescoping side rails, front and rear legs pivoted to the side rails respectively, the rear legs being extensible and having holes therein, end rails having shiftably connected sections and pivoted to the legs and provided intermediate of their ends With hinge joints and each provided with two holes, folding end braces pivoted at one of their ends to the legs and provided With studs, the studs of the braces of the front and rear legs engaging the holes in the end rails When the end rails are fully extended and the legs are contracted and the studs of the braces of the front legs engaging the holes in the rear legs and the studs of the braces of the rear legs engaging holes in the end rails When the end rails are contracted and the legs are extended,
means to hold the legs against folding, means to hold the end rails against folding, and a cover detachably fastened to the side ra1 s.
2. In combination, side rails and end rails connected together to form a frame, said side rails having holes in their sides and upper faces, legs at the corners of the frame, a cover having fiat strips in sections at its side margins, the sections of the strips at one end having holes therein, studs projecting from the other sections of said strips into the holes in the sides of the side rails, and standards provided With hooks at their lower ends detachably engaging the holes in the upper faces of the side rails, said standards having studs at' their upper ends to engage the holes in the strips.
