MORRIS LOWY AND AUGUST J. KREUZKAMP, OF "NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS TO ENGLANDER SPRING BED (30., OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19, 1917.
Application filed June 9, 1914. Serial No. 843,997.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MORRIS LOWY and AUGUST J. KREUZKAMP, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, in the counties of New York and Kings, respectively, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Cribs, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to beds, and more particularly to the class known as cribs.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a light, strong andinexpensive folding crib, having head and foot frames, and also side frames which are attached to said head and foot frames in a manner which enables the said side frames to be folded onto said head and foot frames for ease in shipment and economy in storing the crib when not in use.
Another object of the invention is to mount the side frames on the head and foot frames so as to permit said side frames to' swing both inwardly and outwardly, they being swung inwardly, that is to say onto the head and foot frames, when the crib is to be folded, and outwardly when access is to be had to the interior of the crib.
A further object of the invention is to produce a folding crib that can be manufactured on a commercial scale, or in other words one which is not so difficult to produce as to be beyond the reasonable cost of such an article.
With these and other objects in view,-
which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that many changes may be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and details of construction within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. 7
One of the many possible embodiments of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a crib in its extended position; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the crib in its folded position; Fig. 4f is a front elevation of a detail'showing the manner in which the side frames are attached to the head and foot frames; Fig. 5 is a top plan view thereof; Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the means for fastening the sections of the side frames together; Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 8 is a front elevation of another detail of construction; Fig. 9 is a side elevation of said detail; and Fig. 10 is a section taken on line lO-10 of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale.
Generally speaking, the crib forming the subject matter of the present application for Letters Patent consists of a pair of foldable crib sections which are connected adjacent 'to their inner ends to fold transversely of such crib, in combination with head and foot frames, to which are pivoted side frames, each side frame being made of two sections, one of which is adapted to be folded onto the foot frame and the other one onto the head frame.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 20 indicates the frame of the crib, comprising an oblong structure formed of two similar sections 21 and 22, each of which is constructed, preferably, of angle-iron. The section 21 comprises side rails 23, the outer ends of which are connected by an end rail 24. In a similar manner consists the section 22 of side rails 25, which are connected at their outer ends by an end rail 26. The side rails of both sections of the frame are united by plate members 27, which are pivoted at 28, 28 to the inner ends of the side rails. The two plate members are connected by a cross rod or brace 29 of drop form, to make the structure more rigid, the drop form leaving suflicient clearance under the bed bottom to enable the latter to sag under the weight of the child lying thereon without his body striking the structure. The frame 20 carries a bed spring of any suitable form, not shown in the drawings. Each section of the frame is supported by a pair of legs 30,
,which are provided with casters. Each pair tions of the crib.
center of the bed. One pair of legs is pivot ed at 32 to the side rails of one section, while the other pair of legs is pivoted at 33 to the side rails of the other section of the crib. To each side rail of each section is pivoted a link at the other end of which is pivoted at 35 to a leg. More particularly, the links pivoted to one section are connected to the legs of the other, so that such links cross each other adjacent to the hinged connections of the two sections of the crib. The legs extend at an acute angle to their respec tive side rails when the bed is in its extended position, whereby the structure is rendered safe and prevented from collapsing.
The crib is provided with a head frame 36 and a foot frame 37 to give it the normal appearance of a bedstead. Each of these head and foot frames is pivoted near its lower ends at 38 to arms 39, which are rigidly attached at. 4:0 to the side rail sec- These head and foot frames have their end portions projecting below the side rails, and to the lower ends of these projecting portions are pivoted at 41 bent links 45, the opposite ends of which are pivoted at 4:6 to their respective legs. WVhen folding this bed, the central portions of the side rails are lifted, the links 45 shift the head and foot frames 36 and 37 around their pivots 38 until they are brought in substantially parallel relations to the side rail sections, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The cross drop rod 529 is bent in such a manner'that it rests upon the links when the crib is in its extended position, so that the central portion of the crib is greatly strengthened without the use of middle legs.
The connecting plates 27, to which the inner endsof the side rail sections are pivoted, are each provided with an angle-iron plate 47, which acts as a stop since it overlaps the side rails when the crib is in its 'eXtend'ed position and thus prevents the same from moving out of alin'einent under weight. At the same time these angleiron plates cover the gaps between the inner ends of the side rail sections.
The side frames of the crib are each made of two sections, denoted in the drawings by the numerals 48 and a9, and pivoted in a manner presently to be described to the head frame 36 and to the foot frame 37, respec tively. Each of these side frame sections comprises, for instance, a horizontally eX- tendi'ng top bar 50 and a bottom bar 51, which are connected by vertical pieces 52. The outer ends of the bars 50 and 51 rest upon lugs 53, that are formed upon the head and foot frames, and said bars are connected to said lugs by means of vertical pivot pins 54, thereby allowing the said side frame sections to be swung onto the head and foot frames, respectively, that is to say inwardly, but also outwardly until the bars 50 and 51 abut against the outer bars of said head and foot frames. The inner meeting ends of the bottom bars of the side rail sections rest, when the crib is in its extended position, upon a trough-shaped support 55, of which there is provided one on each side of the crib. These trough-shaped supports are attached in any suitable manner to the angle-iron plates 47. The meeting ends of the top bars 50 of the side frame sections are connected by any suitable means, for instance by a catch 56, that is pivotally attached at '57 to one of said top bars, and carries upon its free end a lug 58, that is adapted to enter a recess 59 in the other one of the top bars. 1
The operation of this device is as follows: When the crib is in its extended position, normally the meeting ends of the side frame sections rest upon the supports 55, and are connected by the batches 56;. If
access is to be had to the interior of the crib, for instance if it is intended to put the child into it or to attend to the child therein, one of the catches 56 is swung around its pivot 57 (Fig. 1), whereby the corresponding side fraine sections are disconnected. Both or either one 'of these side fraine sections can then be slightly lifted, that is disengaged from the support 55 and swung outwardly around the pivots 54. In order to fold the crib, first the side frame sections are swung inwardly onto the head and foot frames. The operator then swings the central portion of the frame 20 upward, which results, due to the connections between the side rails and legs, in swinging said legs until they abut against their respective side rails and the side rails are brought in parallel relation to each other into the positions shown in Fig. 3 ofthe drawings. If desired, an upholstered mattress and the bed clothing can be folded with the frame. At the time it will be obvious that the head and foot frames will be thrown into parallelism with the side rails (F 3), due to the cbnnections between the said head and foot frames and the legs of the crib.
WVhat we claim is 2- V 1. In a folding crib, the combination with a pair of fol'dable crib sections pivotally connected adjacent to their inner ends to fold transversely of such crib by lifting such inner ends and thereby allowing the outer ends to dro'pand close toward each other, of a pair of legs pivoted to each section, means pivotally connecting the legs of each section with the opposite foldable section of the crib, an end frame fulcrumed to each section and linked to the legs of the same section, and side frames connecting, when the crib is in its extended position, said end frames, each side frame being made of two sections hinged to said end frames and adapted to be swung, at will, inwardly onto said end frames or outwardly.
2. In a folding crib, the combination with a pair of foldable crib sections, of a short middle section pivotally connected to the inner ends of said sections, said foldable crib sections folding transversely of the crib by lifting such inner ends and thereby allowing the outer ends to drop and close toward each other, a pair of legs pivoted to each section, means pivotally connecting the legs of each section with the opposite foldable section of the crib, an end frame fulcrumed to each section and linked to the legs of the same section, supports upon said middle section, and side frames connecting, when the crib is in its extended position, said end frames, each side frame being made of two sections hinged to said end frames and adapted to be swung, at will, inwardly onto said end frames or outwardly, said side frame sections being adapted to rest upon said suports.
3. In a folding crib, the combination with a pair of foldable crib sections, of a short intermediate member at each side thereof to which the crib sections are pivotally connected at their inner ends, said foldable crib sections folding transversely of the crib by lifting such inner ends and thereby al lowing the outer ends to drop and close toward each other, a pair of legs pivoted to each section, means pivotally connecting the legs of each section with the opposite foldable section of the crib, an end frame fulcrumed to each section and linked to the legs of the same section, supports upon said intermediate members, side frames connecting, when the crib is in its extended position, said end frames, each side frame being made of two sections hinged to said end frames and adapted to be swung, at will, onto said end frames or outwardly, said side frame sections being adapted to rest upon said supports, stop members carried by said intermediate members for maintaining the crib sections in alinement, and a drop formed llgrace bar connecting said intermediate memers.
4. In a folding crib, the combination with a pair of foldable crib sections, of a short middle section pivotally connected to the inner ends of said sections, an end frame attached to the outer ends of each of said first named sections, supports upon said middle section, and side frames connecting, when the crib is in its extended position, said end frames, each side frame being made of two sections hinged to said end frames and adapted to be swung, at will, inwardly onto said end frames or outwardly, said side frame sections being adapted to rest upon said supports.
