COMBINED CRIB .AND SETTEE.
Application filed October 20,
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID WAssnnMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New'Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Cribs and Settees, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in combined cribs and settees.
One of the objects of the invention is to simplify the construction of furniture of this kind by providing a structure which is light, durable, inexpensive to manufacture, and which can be readily and conveniently con verted into one or the other one of its forms.
Another object of the invention is to produce a settee, the seat of which comprises two sections which are foldable onto each other or can be spread out or extended to form a crib, one of the side frames and the end frames of the latter being adapted to be collapsed into the seat frame sections as said seat frame sections are being folded in converting the crib into a settee.
lVith these and other objects in view,
`which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that many changes may be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and details of construction within the` scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Two of the many possible embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a settee constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. '2 is a front elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same in its extended position forming a crib; Fig.' 4: is a plan view of the crib shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a front elevation of a portion of one of the side frames or side guards of the crib and the connecting means between the same and one of the end frames or end guards thereof; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the detail shown in Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a section taken on line .7 7 of Fig. 5; Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the connecting means between the seat sec- Specication of Letters Patent. tions of the settee; Fig. 9 is a plan view of the detail shown in Fig. 8; Fig. 10 is a side elevation of a. modified settee; Fig. 11 is a side elevation of the same in its extended position; Fig. 12 is a side elevation of a detail of construction thereof; and Fig. 13 is a plan view of the detail shown in Fig. 12.
Referring now more particularly to Figs. 1 to 9, inclusive, it will be observed that the settee is composed of a substantially rectangular frame, comprising front legs l and rear legs Q, which are connected in pairs by transverse tie-rods 3. With the rear legs is made, preferably, integral the back 1 of the settee. The front legs, the rear legs and the back are, preferably, made of tube iron, the back consisting, besides the vertical cornerposts 5 and the connecting top rail 6, of substantially vertically extending bars 7, which connect the top rail 6 to a longitudinally extending tie-rod 7', the latter connecting the legs 2 of the settee. In this manner the back is adapted to form one of the side frames or side guards `of the crib into which it is to be converted. To the top of each of the front legs 1 is riveted, or otherwise attached, an angle-piece 8, and to the latter are fastened transverse or end rails 9, that extend horizontally toward and to the rear legs 2, where they are riveted, or otherwise attached, to a longitudinal or back rail 10, the latter being riveted to the rear legs 2. The end rails 9 and the back rail 10 are formed of angle-iron. To each of the end rails 9 is pivoted at 11 a short angle-piece 12, to which, in turn, is fulcrumed at 13 an angle-iron 111. The angle-irons 141 are adapted to form continuations of the end rails 9, the short angle-pieces 12 allowing, however, the angle-irons 14: to be folded onto the end rails 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The free ends of the anglepieces 14 are connected by an angle-iron rail 15 that runs parallel to the back rail 10. From this it will be observed that the seat of the settee is made of two sections, one be- Ving fix'edly attached to the legs thereof, and
the other one being pivoted to and adapted to be folded onto the first named section. It is to be observed that the end rails 9 and the back rail 10, which are made of angleiron, are inverted, that is to say they rest on their horizontal flanges and their vertical flanges project upward. The angle-pieces 14: and the rail 15 are also inverted when the seat of the settee is extended. For these reasons it is obvious that, when the hinged section of the seat is folded onto the fixed`Y section thereof, there will be formed ample space between the two sections of the seat for receiving and storing the folded parts of the crib hereinafter to be described. To the horizontal flanges of the angle-pieces 14 are fastened vertically disposed arin-rests 16, the height of an arm-rest corresponding exactly to the height of a front leg 1, whereby, when the settee is converted into a crib, the said arm rests form the legs of the pivoted section of the seat of the settee, (Fig. 3). The arm-rests may be connected by a longitudinal rail 17, to lend them the proper rigidity. The crib bottom, that forms at the same time the seat of the settee, may be made of any suitable fabric, for instance a sheet 18, that is provided with eyelets 19 in engagement with springs 20, the other ends of which are hooked into openings 21 in the horizontal iianges of the rails 9, 14, 10 and 15. The sheet 18 is foldable and forms in its extended position (Fig. 4) the crib bottoni and in its folded position (Fig. 1) the settee seat. The two sections of the seat are held together in their folded positions by hooks 22, which are pivoted to the end rails 9 and are adapted to engage lugs 23 on the angle-pieces 14. To the angle-irons 14 is pivoted in proximity to the rail 15 at 24, 24 a frame 25, that corresponds in configuration to the back 4 above described, that is to say, it comprises vertical corner-posts 26, that are connected by a top rail 27 and a bottom rail 28, the top and bottom rails being connected by substantially vertical bars 29. The frame 25 is adapted to be folded onto the pivoted seat section of the settee, and also to be extended in parallel relation to the back 4. In the latter case it forms one of the side frames or side guards of the crib. Each of the posts 26 of the frame 25 is provided with lugs 30, which are in alinement with lugs 31 on the posts 5 of the back of the settee when the frame 25 is in its extended position. To the VAlugs 30 are hinged the end frames or end guards 32 of the crib, for instance by pintles 33, a pin 34 serving to connect each end frame with the corresponding lugs 31 on the back of the settee. The end frames 32 can be folded onto each other and onto the frame 25, and with the latter onto the pivoted section of the seat.
rIhe operation of this device is as follows: In its extended position the seat sections are disposed in a horizontal plane, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the armrests 16 forming then the support for the pivoted section of the seat. The frame 25 extends vertically and forms one of the side frames or side guards of the crib, the end guards 0r end frames being constituted by the frames 32, that are hinged to the frame 25 and in engagement with the lugs 31 upon the back of the settee. On top of the bed bottom may be placed, if desired, a mat tress of the ordinary construction. In order to fold the settee, the operator first disengages the pins 34 from the frames 32 and the lugs 31` the frames 32 are folded then onto the frame 25 by swinging them around the pintles 33. The frame 25 with the frames are then folded onto the pivoted seat section, after which the latter is swung around the pivots 11 onto the fixed seat section. The pins 34- are then put back upon the lugs 31 upon the back. On top of the seat so formed is then placed the folded mattress or a cushion, and the entire structure, if necessary, inclosed by a. sofa cover of any suitable fabric. The extending of the settee is obvious from the foregoing.
The modification of the invention shown in Figs. 10 to 13, inclusive, differs from the one above described in that it is provided with folding legs for the pivoted section of the seat. These legs are denoted by the numeral each comprising a suitably shaped bar, that is pivoted at 36 to one of the angle-pieces 14, and provided with an extension 37, to which is pivoted at 38 an actuating bar 39, the other end of which is connected with the corresponding end rail 9 by the pivot 11, that forms the connection between said end rail and its short angle piece 12. Due to these connections, the legs 35 will be folded onto the vertical flanges of the angle-pieces 14 when the pivoted seat section of the settee is folded upon the stationary seat section thereof and, obviously, the said legs will be extended subtantially at right angles to the said pivoted seat section when the settee is extended to form a cribA What I claim is 1. In a. combined settee and crib, the conibination with a main frame having a back for the settee, of a seat frame made of two sections, one of said sections being fixedly attached to said main frame and the other pivoted to said fixed section, said seat sections being adapted to be brought into a horizontal plane, legs supporting when said seat is extended the pivoted section thereof, a frame fulcrumed to the pivoted seat section adapted to be extended into parallel relation to said back toform with said back the side guards of the crib, and end guards hinged to said fulcrumed side guard, said end guards being adapted to engage said back, or to be folded onto Said fulcrumed side guard and with the latter onto said 4pivoted seat section.
sections, one of Said sections being tixedly attached to said main frame and the other pivoted to said iXed section, said seat seetions being yadapted to be brought into a horizontal-plane, legs supporting when said Seat is extended the pivoted section thereof, said legs being pivoted to said pivoted seat section, a frame fuleruined to the pivoted seat section adapted to be extended into parallel relation t0 said back to form with said back the side guards of the crib, end guards hinged to said fulcrurned side guard, said end guards being adapted to engage said baelnor to be folded onto said fulerumed side guard and with the latter onto said pivoted seat section, and means oonneeting said legs With the fixed section of said seat, whereby said legs are brought at an angle to said pvoted seat section when the latter is extended and into parallel relation therewith when said pivoted seat section is folded upon said fixed seat section.
