To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Moses SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented an Improvement in Folding-Bed Couches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to couches and folding beds. It has for its objects to produce an article of furniture of this character, combining with a couch or divan, a fold-able trundling frame which may be placed thereunder, out of the way when not in use, and constituting a bed in extended condition; to secure simplicity and compactness of structure and ease of operation; and to attain certain other advantages as will hereinafter more fully appear.
The invention consists in the parts and in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and set forth with particularity in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating a practical embodiment of the invention,.-
Figure 1 is a view with the end panel of the divan removed and the back frame thereof in section, and showing the seatand back inend elevation, and also showing the foldable trundling bed-frame in end elevation as folded and placed out of the way under the seat;
' Fig. 2 is a detail View on an enlarged scale, of the trundling frame as folded and in section; v
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view of the frame, showing the relative positions of certain parts thereof in its openedcondition; and a I Fig, 1 is a fragmentary View showing the stop for limiting the outward position of the frame.
, Referring now to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the end panel and 2 the back panel of the box-frame of the divan. Attached to the endpanels, as by bolts 3, is
.'the seat-frame 4 having the usual upholstered cushion 5 thereon. Pivoted on the end panels, as at 6, is the upholstered back 7 which is spaced from the back panel 2 and rests with its lower end portion against stop members 8 on the seat-frame 4:, thereby providing a compartment 9 for the storage of bed clothing, access beinghad to said compartment by swinging the back 7 upward as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Beneath the seat-frame 4 is a foldable Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 25, 1921.
1918. Serial No. 233,470.
trundling bed-frame comprising a panel or front board 10 serving as a removable finishing panel for the box-frame of the divan when the foldable trundling frame is placed under the seat and as a support for said frame in its extended condition.
On the inner face of said panel 10, near the ends thereof, are parallel angle members 11 to which are pivotally'attached hinged members12, also of angle section. Attached to said hingemembers 12 is a supporting frame comprising a T-shape end frame and an angle-shape cross member 13, the stem of the T 14 and the cross-head 15 thereof being also of angle section, and said stem and head being braced by the diagonal connecting member 16.
livoted to the cross-heads 15, as at 17, are the side rails 18 of one of the folding sections of the bed-frame, said rails being preferably of angle section as are substantially all the othermembers of the frame. The opposite end portions of the rails 18 are pivotally attached, as at 19, to a supporting frame comprising the end members 20 and cross connecting members 21 and. 22, the one, 21, being of angle section, and the other, 22, being a flat bar.
On the free .endsof the members 20 are angle-pieces 23 which straddle the upstanding flanges of the side rails 2st of a basef anie whose outer endportions are riveted tothe lower end portions of the members 11 on the panel 10, while their inner end portions are attached to a cross member 25.
In the collapsed or folded condition of the frames, the pieces 23 rest on said upstanding flanges of the rails 24, while the rails 18 rest with their horizontal flanges on the horizontal flanges of the members 20 (see Figs. 1 and 2), thereby affording a support. In the opened condition of the frames, as shown by the dotted lines in F 1, the pieces 23 are engaged in notches26 provided therefor in saidupstanding flanges of the rails 24:.
Pivoted on the cross-heads 15 of the T- frames, as at 27, is a second folding frame comprising the side rails 28 and the end member 29. The frames 18 and 28, which are hinged on the opposite ends of the crossstems 14 of the T-frames, as at 84. By this arrangement, the leg members 31 lie alongside of the vertical flanges of the rails 28 in angles to the rails 28 and are steadied by the bars 33, when the frame is in opened condition.
To limit the outward position of the baseframe, the panels lare provided withsuitable stops for engagement by'the end member 25 of said base frame. As shown, these stops may comprise bracket members 36-having offset end portions 37 projecting into the path of said end member 25 and, obviously, to facilitate moving the frame, therails 28 are provided with suitable casters or rollers 38 which rest on the floor the same as the casters 39 which'are provided on the boxframe of the divan proper. It is also obvious that the base-frame may, if desired,
: be mounted to slide on some suitable supporting guide'\vay' on the end panels 1.
From the foregoing it is noted that the invention coinprehends a structure which may be used as an ordinary divan or couch, and it may be readily converted into a fullsize bed. Any suitable foldable bed-bottom fabric may be conveniently supported from the horizontal flanges of the respective frame members 15,18 and 28, and the pad or mattress 40 (see Fig. 1) may be readily folded therewith.
To open the trundling section of the device, it is only necessary to first move out the base to its full extent and then swing up the upper folding frame and thence outward and downward, causing the T-frame to swing up to the vertical position, 'as'best shown in Fig. 3, during which time the inner end of the lower folding frame will be lifted until the'pieces 23 are brought into engagement with the notched portions 26 of the.
rails 24 of the base-frame. As the upper folding frame is brought down to horizontal position, the leg members 31, through the pivotal link connections 38, right themselves to vertical position so as to rest on the floor to support the foot of the bed; and as the base-frame is held from further outward movement by the stops 37 which are engaged by the end member'25, the-inner folding frame cannot collapse as long as the supporting frame is engaged with the notches26 of thebase-frame, but will tend to abut the seats of the divan proper.
To fold back or collapse the frames for replacement under the divan seat, it is only the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims, and it is, therefore, not
limited to that shown in the drawings."
What is claimed is:
1. In a foldable bed-frame'comprising a base} frame, a supporting frame hinged thereon, and two opposed bed-frames hinged on said supporting frame, one of said opposed bed-frameshaving foldable supporting legs adapted to support the same in opened position, a folding supporting frame hinged on the other of said bedframe s,'said foldin 3111011111 frame bein ada ated to O C D rest on said base-frame and support said bedframe in collapsed position and being adapt ed to engage said base-frame to support said bed-frame in opened position, and .means on said base-frame adapted to cooperate with the free end of said folding supporting frame for preventing accidental disengagement of said folding supporting frame from said base-frame when saidbed-frame is in opened position.
2. In a device of a divan or thelike, and a; foldable trundle bed-frame movable in collapsed position under the seat of said diva-n and operating in'open position to constitute a bed with said seat, said trundle bed-frame comprislng a base-frameprovlded with'notched portions, a T-frame hinged on said base-frame,
and two bed-frameshinged respectively on the opposite ends of the cross-headof said T-frame, one of'said bed-frames having foldable legs adapted to support said frame in open position,'and a supporting frame pivotally connected to the other of'said bed;
the character described,
frames, said supporting frame being adapted to rest on said base-frame and support said bed-frame in collapsed position and being adapted to engage the notched. portions of said base-frame andrigidly support said bed-frame in opened position.
Signed at St. Louis, Missouri, this third day of May, 1918.
