COMBINATION DAVENPORT AND GOUCH SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 753,487, dated r h 1, 1904.

i 4 Application filed October 26, 1903. Serial No- 178,58&- (N0 modehl Improvements in Combination Davenports I and Couches, of which the following is a speci fication.

Our invention relates to improvements in couches, and particularly to sofas or settees which are convertible into beds and which combine three articles of furniture in one piece; and the object is to produce a simple piece of furniture which serves as a wardrobe and capable of being converted into a bedor settee at will and which is easilyoperated.

Another object is to produce a piece of furniture which can be produced at small cost and made highly ornamental and which will be strong and durable.

Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description, and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Reference is had to the accompanying draw-.

ings, which form a part of this application and specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the article of furniture called herein a davenport. The lower part A is the wardrobe and is constructed with a bottom 1, side pieces 2 and-3, and end pieces 4L The lid of the box A or wardrobe consists of a combined seat B and bed 1). For raising the lid anyconvenient loop 5 may beattached' to the lid fora hand purchase- Inorder to throw the lid forward and upward so that the lid or seat will not come against the back of the device, opening devices are used. The opening devices consist of a pair of plates 6, attached to the bottom of the lid and provided with depending flanges and a tongue 7. Two bars 8 and 9 are pivotally connected to the depending flanges of plates 6 and also pivotally connected to the interior of the box A,and a spiral spring 10 is connected to the tongue '7 and to the interior of the box A. When a pull is made on the loop 5, the pivoted members 8 and 9 allow the lid to swing forward and upward, and the spiral springs pull the lower back part of the lid forward.

The mattress or bed D is foldable, and the edges are attached to cleats or

11 and 12. When the device is used for a settee, the bed is folded and inclosed in a box composed of

13 and 14, hinged together by hinges 15. the part13, and strip or cleat 12 is attached to part 1 1. The bed is provided with wovenwire springs 16. One side of the springs 16 is attached to a cleat or strip 17, which is attached to part 13 of inclosing box, and the other side of the springs 16 is attached to a cleat or strip 18, which is attached to part 14 of the inclosing box. When the device is used for a bed, the outer part of the bed may be supported on removable legs 19, which engage metallic staples or loops 20, which are attached to the box portion 14. The seat B may be held down in position by a spring-catch 21, which forms no part of this invention. The bed may be provided with

22 and 23, the springs 23 serving also to support the seat B. The bed D is provided with a foldable pillow-support 24, which as used on the davenportcan be only half as wide as Strip or cleat 11 is attached to the bed. With a piece of furniture like that shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the pillow-support 25 may be as wide as the bed.

The bed and the seat and the wardrobeof the difierent variations shown are the same in construction and arrangement and operation in all the variations. The device shown in Fig. 3 is not provided with side arms or back. The device shown in Figs. 2, 4, and 5 is provided with side arms 26, which are independent of the back 27. These arms are attached to the bed portion and to the foldable part of the bed portion and may take the place of legs for the outer part of the bed, as they move with the bed portion.

In the davenport the bed and seat move and operate independently of the arms. The arms 28 are detachably attached to the wardrobe portion A by suitable bolts and nuts or screws. The back 29 is attached to the box or wardrobe A by means of cleats 30, which are removably attached to the box, and is further braced by the side arms 28. The side arms 28 have top braces 31 rigid therewith and upright braces 32 rigid therewith. Each top brace 31 is rabbeted and the back piece fits in these rabbets and is caught inside the edges of the upright braces 32. The back is thus made rigid by means of the side arms. The davenport, as described and illustrated, may be called a knockdown piece of furniture, because the arms and back are detachable; This feature is important because in shipping the arms and back may de detached and packed or crated separately from the body portion. Such a piece of furniture can then be shipped without danger of breaking and damage.

The advantage in the construction and arrangement in the article of furniture herein described is that it serves three purposes a settee, a bed, and a wardrobeand the operationis simple and convenient. Normally the device is used for a settee. All that is necessary to convert the same into a bed is to unfold the bed or swing the seat forward one hundred and eighty degrees and place the removable legs in place. When it is necessary to use the wardrobe, simply raise the lid of the wardrobe, which lid consists of the combined bed and seat.

Various changes may be made in the construction of this furniture without departing from our invention.

Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A new article of manufacture comprisinga piece of furniture of the character described having a stationary member constituting a wardrobe, two movable members folded together and inclosing a mattress attached to both members and constituting a lid for the wardrobe, means for raising said lid upward and forward for the purpose set forth as said Wardrobe is being opened, and means adapting said folding members to form a settee or bed at will, the upper member being upholstered on the outside and serving as a seat when folded and being hinged to the lower member at the front side whereby said seat may be turned and opened forward to form a bed of said folding members, the lower member being supported on said wardrobe and the upper member being provided with removable legs.

2. A new article of manufacture comprising a piece of furniture of the character described having a stationary member provided with a suitable back and side arms, two movable members folded together inclosing a mattress and springs therefor attached to both members and constituting a lid for said stationary member, means connecting said lid to said stationary member and capable of raising said lid upward and forward as said lid is turned to open said stationary member, and means adapting said folded members to form a seat or a bed at will, said folded members being hinged together at the front side whereby the upper member may be turned forward to unfold said mattress when said members are to form a bed, the lower member being supported on said stationary member and the upper member being provided with removable legs when serving as a bed.

3. A new article of manufacture comprising a piece of furniture of the character described having three members hinged together constituting normally a settee and wardrobe and capable of being converted into a bed at will, detachable side arms and a detachable back for the lower one of said members, upright and horizontal braces for said side arms, said horizontal braces being rabbeted at their rear ends to receive the edges of said detachable back whereby said back is held rigid with said lower member by said braces.

4. A new article of manufacture comprising a piece of furniture of the character described having three members hinged together constituting normally a settee and wardrobe and capable of being converted into a bed at will, de-

tachable side arms and a detachable back for the lower one of said members, and upright and horizontal braces for said side arms, said horizontal braces being rabbeted at their rear ends to receive the edges of said back where by said back is caught in said rabbets in front of said upright braces and held rigid with said lower member.

5. A new article of furniture comprising a stationary member provided with suitable side armsand a back detachably secured thereto, said stationary member constituting a Wardrobe, two folding members inclosing a mattress and springs therefor and constituting a lid for said wardrobe, and means connecting said lid to said wardrobe capable of moving said folded members upward and forward from said back when said wardrobe is opened, the upper one of said folding members being upholstered on" the outside and forming a seat when folded and being hinged to the lower folding member at the front side whereby said seat may be turned forward to expose said mattress to form a bed of said folding members,
