Description

@ffice 4JACOB D OURSON, O.
F COLUMBUS, OHIO.
Leners ParmfNo. 88,146, dated March 23, 1869.
IMPRO'V'ED SOFA-BEDSTEAI).
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JACOB DoURsoN, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin, and State of Ohio, have in. vented a useful and improved Portable Sofa-Bedstead; and I do hereby declare the following to bc a full, clear, and exact description thereof, sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to fully understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of the speciiicatiou, and in which- Figure I is a front view of my sofa.
FignreII, an end view of the same.
FigurelII, a rear view.
Fignre IV, a transverse vertical section.
Figure V, a side elevation of the sofa, adapted as a bedstead.
Figure VI, an vend view of the same.
Figures VII, VIII, and IX, detail Views to be hereinafter more fully described.
My invention is an improvement in that class of sofas which'c-an, by a simple adjustment, be adapted for use as bedsteads.
My invention consists mainly in -the construction and arrangement of a hinge, which so connects the parts togetherthat the sofa may be readily converted into a bedstead, or packed for transportation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding -parts in the several gures.
In thedrawingsa a. represent the end-pieces of the sofa, having vorti- =cal posts b b at the front.`
To the rear sides of these end-pieces, posts c are at tached by :my suitable hinges, d d. I
End-pieces e, like those marked a,`are hinged in the lsame manner to the posts c.
Themattress-supporting frame is made'of longitudinal strips, f f, and transverse end-strips.
These latter are each madein sections h ij k, jointed together, as shown.
Longitudinal slats vvl are xed to the end` strips.
On the inner face of each end piece a a, e e, I fix,
horizontal ledges, 'rn/m.`
a On top the ledges m'of -th'e end pieces a, the sections h of the jointed end strips are supported, and
secured to said end pieces a by means of a single screw, if desired.- v
The remaining sections i j k are not attached to the head and foot-boards.
By reference to Figs. I, II, III, and- IV, it will be seen that wlie'n in use as a sofa, the sections k of the jointed strips, together with the side strip f and slats l, are adjusted, so as to occupy a vertical position, and
there supported by the end pieces c, which are folded back, as shown in Fig'. III.
occupy the positions shown in Fig.' IV.
To convert the sofa into a bedstead,`the end pieces e are turned out straight, and the sections k, with the strip f and' slats, first folded down on top` the stationary parts' h, (the intermediate sections permitting this.' and then turned back to a horizontal position, fso as to rest ou the ledges m ofthe end pieces e.
To adapt the bedstead for use as a sofa, the parts k, with their attachments, are iirst folded down on to the fixed sections h, and then raised, a downward pressure being at the same time exerted-on the strips f, which causesthe parts to assume the position shown in Fig.Y IV, where they are sustained -by the end pieces c, folded in, as before.
During these several adjustments, it is not necessary to remove the mattress, which may be so made as to serve both as a bed for the bedstead and as a seat and back for the sofa.
In Fig. IX is shown a fastening for holding the parts of the bedstead together.
a.' represents the piece which is secured to the posts, and
b c d are different views of the piece which goes through the end rail of the mattress-frame.
l To pack the sofa-bedstead for transportation, the end Npieces are detached from the mattress-frame, which is folded together, enclosing the mattress, if desired.
The head and foot-boards are also folded.
By constructing the hinge in sections, h t j k, I am enabled to bring the back down to the usual height of a sofa, and also to bring part of the mattress-frame down below the seat of the sofa.
The sofa-bedstead can be made as ornamental as desired, and its construction is such, that when in use as a sofa, there is nothing unusual in itsappearance.
The advantages of my invention will be appreciated on account of the simplicity of construction and ,the ease with which the sofa may be converted into a bedstead, and cioe 'vel-sa.
Having thus describedmy invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' l. The hinge of the mattress-frame, made insections It i j k, jointed together, substantially. as herein described, for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the mattress-frame, having jointed end pieces, and the folding headjand foot-secf tions, constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. Y
JACOB DOURSON. Witnesses:
J. D. Wmenr, O. A. POLAND.
When the sections k are turned up, the parts i j'
