11mm Patent No. 96,266, dated 0ctober26,1869.
IMPROVED LOUNGE AND sore-3211' The Sche'dulexefen'ed to in these Letters Patent and. making par'tof the same.
Know all men by these presents:
That I, R. M. REEBY, of Worcester, county of .Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lounges and Sofa-Beds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a lounge, with my improvements applied thereto;
Figure 2 represents a perspective view of the lounge, shown in fig. 1, when arranged to be used as a bed;
Figure 3 represents a cross-section of fig. 1; and
Figure 4 represents a cross-section of fig. 2.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs, to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
' The nature of my invention consists in the combi nation,'with the frame of a loungeor sofa, of a folding bottom, as will be hereafter explained.
In the drawings A represents the frame of the lounge, to the inner side ofthe front rail of which the central bottom piece B is hinged, as shown at a, while to the outer lower edge of the piece B ishinged the supporting-piece G, the back supporting-piece D being hinged to the upper inner edge of the piece B, as shown at d.
' A narrow strip, E, is hinged at e to the inner upper edge of I the piece 1), as fully indicated in figs. 2, 3, and 4.
To the outer under side of the piece O are hinged two' legs F F, which can be folded up in recesses cut or formed in the under side of the piece 0, when the bottom is to be folded, as shown in fig. 1, or swung out, to support the bottom when the article is to be used a bed, as shown in figs. 2 and 4.
The upper edges of the end rails are recessed or cut out to receive the buttons f, as indicated infig. 2, and which buttons can be turned in, to support the inner edge of the part D, when the article is to be used as a bed, asshown in fig. 2, or turned out into the recesses when the bottom is to be folded up.
The operation of unfol'dlng the bottom is as follows:
,The part 0 is raised up, and drawn forward, thereby drawing out the parts B and D, as shown in fig. 2,
after which the rear edge of the part D is raised slightly, and the buttons f turned in, and then the parts D and E are folded back, as indicated in the same figure.
To fold up the bottom, the part E is folded over on top of the part D, and both are then folded over upon the part B, thus leaving the bottom vGr of the sofa or lounge open, and fully exposed to receive the bedclot-hing- After the bed-clothing has been properly deposited in the receptacle G,'the parts B, D, and E, are tugned up and folded back over into the chamber G, while the part 0 is folded forward, on its hinge 1), upon the part B', as fully indicated in fig. 3, legs B being at the same time folded into their recesses in the part (has indicated in dotted lines, same figure.
If desired,a rack may be combined with the rear of the part I), to hold it at any desired inclination or ele- 'vation, the same as a similar device is combined with Y the head of a spring-bed bottom.
By having a narrow piece, E, hinged to the rear part D, to fold back, as before explained, there is no binding or chafing against the back H of the lounge or sofa when the bottom is folded up.
The part 0 is made longer than the parts D and E, so that when folded into the 'position shown in fig. 1, it rests firmly upon the end rails of the frame A.
It will he understood that the back H and the ends I I may be constructed, finished, and upholstered in any desired style, representing a lounge or sofa, as the case may be.
Haringdescribed myimproved lounge and sofa-bed,
What I claim therein as new, and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination of the folding-parts G B D with the frame A, under the arrangement substantially as described, so that when the said parts are folded up, the latter two will be received within the frame, and the former will rest on top of the frame, and form the sofa-seat, as set forth.
2. A lounge or sofa-bed, the parts of which are constructed and combined together substantially as shown and'described.
, R. M. REEBY.
