UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. GOATES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING LOUNGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,266, dated April 30, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. OoATEs, of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Foldin g Lounge, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to construct a folding lounge in a neat, simple, cheap, and compact manner, and so as to be conveniently carried about to any required place for use in case of sudden indisposition, or when desired for purposes of ease and pleasure. The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a lounge with a center main frame and four legs and a head and foot leaf to fold up, each of the latter having folding legs and supporting-braces.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In reference to the drawing and letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of folded lounge With cover and curtain. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the lounge-frame. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through foot-leaf on the line 1 2. Fig. 5 is a portion of a folding leg, showing catch.
The entire frame can be constructed of either wood or metal, or both combined. The center frame B can be made of any required strength consistent with a due degree of light- The four legs B can be plain or ornamental, and can be set in B, permanently or removable, so as to take less room in packing for transportation. The length and size of B can be optional with the manufacturer. The head leaf 0 can be the same length and width of B, but less strong, of course, and attached to the right and upper portion of the latter by hinges S S. On each side of (3 there is a folding leg, E, secured to the frame by screws G, or equivalents, and a leg-brace, F, secured by screws. The braces should be of proper length and strength and have a slot near the lower ends to fit on the body of the catch H on each folding leg. Sufficient room should be left between the right and left sides of the bottoms L in each leaf and the inside of both sides of the frames for the folding legs E and braces F. The folding legs in 0 should be longer than those in D, so as to elevate the head. The foot-leaf D is not quite as long as the inside of B, and only as wide as the inside width of the latter, so it can be folded inside of center frame B, and is attached to the front transverse piece of center frame by hinges S S. The front piece of B is made lower than the rest of the frame to enable the leaf D to fold into it. The leaf D is provided with folding legs and braces secured the same as those in 0, except that the legs are shorter and allow 1) to stand horizontally. The front top ends of B can be rounded oif. The folding legs E have washers \V on the screws to throw the former as far from the inside of the frame as the length of catch H combined with the thickness of the braces F, so as to permit the legs E to fold alongside of the braces F. The bottoms L are secured to the strips K, as shown by Fig. 4. The strips K are placed on the front and back portions of (J and D, but can be attached to the sides also in B. There can be straps or double tapes secured behind the center frame at Q Q, and fastened to catches R R on the front of frame. The straps are to hold the frames and cushion in proper place when used as a seat.
The operation is as follows: Take off the cover; remove the straps from the front catches and throw them back; raise up 0 and turn it toward the right, and put down the folding legs and set the braces do the same with D, and the lounge is ready for use. Turn up D into 13; fold legs and braces; then fold 0 onto D, secure straps to catches, and the lounge is in a folded form.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the folding head-leaf C, foot-leaf D, center frame B, folding legs E, folding braces F, and the bottoms L in head and foot leaves, as described and set forth.
WILLIAM B. COATES.
