COMBINED BED AND TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 30, 1910.
Application filed June 15, 1910. Serial No. 566,948.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE Jnnor, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Roaringfork, in the county of Vise and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Beds and Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a combined bed and table, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a table that can be easily collapsed to form a bed; second, to arrange a mattress in one part of the table and a spring in the other part whereby said mattress and spring can be easily placed in position for use in connection with a bed; third, to provide a structure of the above type that can be easily handled to provide either a rigid bed or table, and fourth, to accomplish the above objects by a structure that is simple, durable, inexpensive to manufacture and eflicient for the purposes for which it is intended.
The above objects are attained by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be under stood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed, as to the size, shape and manner of assemblage without departing from the scope of the invention.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a table in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the table collapsed, showing the manner of connecting the legs thereto, Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the collapsed table in the form of a bed, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of a detached spring, and Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view of the collapsed table as used for a bed.
A table in accordance with my invention comprises table tops 1 and 2 provided with side plates 3 and end plates 4. Hinged to the lower outer edges of the end plates 4, as at 5 are auxiliary feet 6 adapted to be used in supporting the table in a collapsed position and in the form of a bed.
At the juncture of the inner sides of the plates 3 and 4 are sockets, comprising plates 7 secured to the under sides of the table tops 1 and 2, said plates having angle bars 8 forming in conjunction with the inner sides of the plates 4 and 3 sockets for the reduced ends 9 of table legs 10, the upper ends of said legs being off-set or enlarged, as at 11, whereby when the auxiliary feet 6 are folded against the enlarged or ofi-set portions 11 of the legs 10, each leg will have an enlarged upper end, as best shown in Fig. l of the drawings, forming an ornamental portion of the table.
Hinged to the lower outer sides of the legs 10, as at 12 are table feet 13 and connected to these feet are C-shaped frames 14 having the confronting sides thereof connected by longitudinal braces 15.
Hinged to the inner sides of the end plate 4 of the table top 2, as at 16 is the end section 17 of a folding spring, said spring comprising additional sections 18, hinged together, as at 19 and hinged to the section 17 as at 20. The sections of the spring are of equal size and are adapted to be folded against the under side of the table top 2 and held in a folded position by straps 21 and 22 connected to the table top 2, as at 23, these straps having the ends thereof connected by an ordinary buckle 24.
Hinged to the under side of the table top 1, as at 25 is a sectional mattress 26 having the sections thereof connected whereby said sections can be folded against the under side of the table top 1, said folded sections being retained in engagement therewith by straps 27 connected by a buckle 28, similar to the straps 22. The mattress is of a length corresponding to the spring and is adapted to be folded upon said spring, when the spring is supported by the table legs 13, frames 14 and auxiliary legs 6, the table tops 1 and 2 being positioned to form the head and tail piece of the bed. In order that the spring will be properly held upon the frames 14, the free end section 18 of the spring is provided with right angularly disposed lugs 29 adapted to engage behind blocks or lugs 30 provided therefor upon the inner sides of the end plates 4 adjacent to the table leg sockets.
The under side of the table top 1 is provided with an eye 31 adapted to receive a pivoted hook 32 carried by the under side of the table top 2, whereby these table tops can be connected together when the structure is in the form of a table, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 The table feet 13 and the auxiliary feet 6 are adapted to be connected by detachable longitudinal rods 33 when said feet are positioned to form the bed.
It is thought that the manner of collapsing the table to form a bed will be fully understood without further description, and I reserve the right to make the entire struc ture of wood or any other suitable material.
Having now described my inventirn what I claim as new, is
1. A combined table and bed, comprising table tops, legs carried thereby, table feet hinged to the lower ends of said legs, frames connecting said table feet, auxiliary legs supported by said table tops, spring adapted to be folded and held against the under side of one of said table tops, and a sectional mattress adapted to be folded against the under side of the other table top, substantially as, and for the purpose herein described.
2. A combined table and bed, comprising table tops, legs carried thereby, table feet hinged to the lower ends of said legs, frames connecting said table feet, auxiliary legs supported by said table tops, a sectional spring adapted to be folded and held against the under side of one of said table tops, a
a sectional sectional mattress adapted to be folded against the under side of the other table top, and means carried by the under sides of said tabl tops for connecting said table tops in the form of a table.
3. A combined table and bed, comprising table tops, side plates carried thereby, end plates carried thereby, sockets carried thereby, sockets carried by the under sides of said table tops at the juncture of said side and end plates, legs mounted in said sockets, table feet hinged to the lower ends of said legs, frames connecting said table feet, auxiliary legs hinged to said end plates, a sectional spring connected to the under side of one of said table tops and adapted to be folded thereagainst, a sectional mattress connected to the other side of the table top and adapted to be folded thereagainst, means adapted to hold said spring and said mattress in engagement with said table tops, and means for connecting said table tops in the form of a table.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EUGENE JENOI. W'itnesses C. WV. BRUFEE, JOHN NIDERINAZER.
