NITE STATES CHARLES I3. DENNIS AND LLOYD B. DENNIS, OF FINDLAY, OI-IIO.
TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,296, dated December 20, 1898.
Application filed August 11, 1898. Serial No. 688,389. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHARLES E. DENNIS and LLOYD B. DENNIS, citizens of the United States, residing at Findlay, in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tables, and particularly to a table adapted for general use and to be adjusted so'as to extend over abed, lounge, or other place holding an invalid or sick person.
The object of the invention is to provide a.
table having certain of its legs capable of being swung laterally to form an opening, clearance, or space between the top and bottom ofv the table to permit the latter being applied to an object holding an invalid or other person.
Other objects and advantages accruing from the special construction and arrangement of parts of the table will be revealed in the specification and claims to follow.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, Figure l is a perspective view with the table applied to a bed, the latter being partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the table with the swinging legs folded and shown in dotted lines unfolded. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 90 00, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of legs.
The same numeral references denote the same parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
The table-top 1 has end cross-braces 2 and side pieces 3 secured to the under side of the table-top, and the bottom or base 4 of the table has side pieces 5 secured thereto.
The legs 6 are fixed to the bottom and top of the table through the top and bottom side pieces 3 and 5 and the leg-arms 7 and 8.
The movable or lateral swinging legs 9 have a top piece 10 and a like bottom piece 11 with arms 12 secured to said pieces, and these legs are connected to the fixed legs by hinges 13. All the legs are semicircular, and when the swinging legs are folded back upon the fixed legs there is left an interval or space between similar table with legs 15 secured directly to the table top andbottom, thus dispensing with the side pieces, and the swinging legs 16 are hinged directly to the fixed legs without side pieces.
In both forms of table there are hooks and eyes 17 and 18, respectively, orsimilar equivalent means for holding the swinging legs either folded or unfolded.
Ye do not wish to limit ourselves to any particular size, shape, or material nor to any special means for connecting the legs together' so that certain of them will swing.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a table, the combination of the fixed legs, and the swinging legs connected to the fixed legs at the sides of the table independent of each other, and adapted to be folded separately upon the fixed legs, as set forth.
2. A table comprising a suitable top and bottom, legs fixed thereto, the swinging legs, and the hinges connecting the swinging with the fixed legs, so that the former may be fold ed to the sides of the table, upon the latter.
3. The combination in a table, of the fixed legs, the swinging legs, hinges connecting the two sets of legs together, and means to hold the swinging legs either in folded or unfolded position.
4. The combination, with the table top and bottom, of the fixed legs having arms secured to the table top and bottom, swinging legs hinged to the fixed legs and having arms, and the hooks and eyes for holding the swinging legs in either folded or unfolded position.
In witness whereof we hereunto set our hands in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES E. DENNIS. LLOYD B. DENNIS.
