CONVERTIBLE CHAIR...
T0 allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUoonri-r WALTER, subject of the Government of Austria-I-Iungary, residing at Cleveland, in thecounty of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to convertible chairs, and has for its object to provide for an improved Construction, which can ordi narily be used as a chair, but which can be adjusted to convert the chair into a childs table, provided with a low seat, beside the same. The back of the chair may be swung down to form a seat, and may also be adjusted to provide a couch or bed for a child.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in Wl1IlCl1- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the chair set up.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, converted into a small table and lower seat.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing the same changed to a small.table and couch.
Fig. 1 is a rear elevation of Fig. 1.
The main frame of the chair comprises the front legs 30 and the rear legs 13, supporting a top piece 20, and braced by ordinary braces 31. 18 is an upholstered seat which is hinged at 19, to the front edge of the top 20, so that it may be swung up upon the top, as shown in Fig. 1, or swung down in front thereof, as shown in Fig. 2.
The back ismade in two sections, an upper section 9, and a lower section 10, hinged together at 11. The lower section is connected to the rear legs 13 by means of arms 14, fastened to the inside of the side pieces of the back 10, and these arms 14:, have lugs at 14, whichengage in vertical grooves 12 in the inner surface of the rear legs 13. This affords a sliding pivotal connection, which permits the back to be shifted from upright to horizontal position, or vice versa.
The back is supported in its various positions by means of braces 6, of which there is one at each side. These braces are pivoted at 35 to links 36, which are pivoted at 37 at one end, to the lower section 10, and at the other end have pins 38, which are engageable in any one of a series of notches in keeper plates 8, which are secured to the sides of the upper section 9. The opposite Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 26,1918. Serial 110.2%,274. I
Patented Apr. 8, 1919f ends of the braces 6 have lugs 10, which are engageable in any one of a series of notches in keeper plates 7, which are fastened to the sides of the seat frame. p a I v The lower back sect-ion 10 is also provided with hinged legs 15, adapted to support same when it is let down to. a horizontal position as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. When the back is upright as in Fig. 1, these legs fold down beside the back, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The upper back section 9 is also provided with pivoted-braces 17 which may be let down to engage in notches 16 in the legs 15, when the section 9 is swung down to form a couch as shown in Fig. 3.
When the device is used as a chair, shown in Fig. 1, the back sections stand upright, the lugs 14 being slid upwardly in the grooves 12 to allow the back to stand on the top piece 20, and the back is supported in upright position by the braces 6 which are engaged in the proper notches in the keepers 7.
To convert the device to a childs table and chair, as shown in Fig. 2, the seat 18 is swung down and the back sections are lowered beside the rear legs, the section 10 being swung to a horizontal position on the pivot lugs 14*, and the section 9 being swung up on the hinges 11, the parts being supported in this position by suitable adjustment of the braces 6 and the links 36, in the keepers 7 and 8, the legs 15 being also let down to support the seat. This produces a childs seat facing a small table.
The section 9 may also be swung down to form a couch for a child as shown in Fig. 3, the braces 17 being then engaged in the notches 16.
I claim:
1. A convertible chair comprising a main seat frame and legs, and a back formed in upper and lower sections hinged together, the lower section having a sliding pivot con nection with the rear legs, whereby it may be swung down beside said legs to form a lower seat, and supporting connections between the said seat frame and the back sections.
2. A convertible chair comprising a main frame, having a top and legs, a back having shiftable pivot connections to the legs and adapted to be swung down to horizontal position beside the same, supplemental legs pivoted to said back, and braces connecting the main frame and the backadjustable to support the latter in either vertical or horizontal position.
3, A convertible chair comprising a main frame having a top and legs, a back comprising a lower section pivoted to the main frame and an upper section hinged to the lower section, braces connecting the main frame and the baokand adjustable to supportthe latter .in :either upright or horizontal position, folding legs on the lower sec- H 4. Acon verti'ble ChHlI COIDPIlSlHg theseat frame and legs, the lower back section 10 15 having a shiftable pivot connection to the rear legs, the upper section 9 hinged to said lower section, the adjustable braces 6 and adjustable links 36 connecting said sections to the seat frame, and the folding legs 15 on 20 the lower back section.
In testimony whereof, I do aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
